Thanks. It's progressing OK. I'm close to finishing the analysis of the PCB and mapping things back to the microcontroller outputs. Details of this in a follow-up post soon.

Reading online, apparently this is one of the changes in KiCad 10; previous versions didn't load all libraries into RAM. It's been done to speed up user interaction when choosing symbols and footprints. It does seem very snappy, so I suppose it was worth it! I'm guessing that when the feature was developed, probably people thought PCs and laptops would continue to be supplied with more and more RAM..

No this is not a stale post coming back to life. I recall some of the KiCAD pro's talking about this.

I finally had reason to invest in this KiCAD tool and was not disappointed. It felt like having a Cole notes for an examine. Only have to remember the details that are important. It appears the software has undergone some revisions since this was posted. Some options (i.e. -f) have been deprecated.

This github resource https://github.com/devbisme/KiPart/tree/master had lots of examples to follow.

Thank you Shabaz, for this well written tutorial. I made a couple of footprints in KiCad a couple of months ago but have zero recall of how I did it... so this tutorial will be a nice refresher.
