Using git for version control in KiCad

I would like to manage my KiCad projects better. I recently started using git for Arduino projects with VSCode.

Will git work with KiCad? Do you have any resources you could share to do a setup?

My internet search has taken me down a few rabbit hole. I figure someone here has found the right rabbit hole.

  • Devil's advocate time.. I wonder if it's not worth it, for hobby KiCad projects. It may be just as useful to just zip up the project folder and put it on a shared drive if anyone else wants to work on it. Sometimes I'll do a "pseudo-clone" by just copying the folder, giving it a new name, and continuing. With KiCad it's easy to rename all the project files, and then you've got a new branch that you'll never merge or sync (that wouldn't work anyway with KiCad).

    And then, at a suitable point, if using github, either create a release or (cruder still but probably just as acceptable), just zip with with a revision number and upload it as a new file, and stick the text explanation in the Readme.

    This is also a valuable comment, since KiCAD has an auto-backup feature and places a timestamped zip of the whole project inside [project_directory]/[project_name]-backup folder. You don't get a proper version controlled project this way, however, every single zip file is a standalone, proven to work archive, which is great.
