My 3rd big Halloween Project - an actual nightmare

Catwell
Catwell
28 Oct 2015

A little background... here are my first two Halloween projects:

The Scary Door

The Scary Porch

Now my third one... In this project I want to control a ton of LEDs and output sound.  Sound I have covered, from the Scary Porch project. However, the LEDs are the nightmare.

I am currently using shift registers to address all the LEDs in the group, working on controlling 100 LEDs right now. A shift register take 1 output and turns it into 8. It's working, but this seems like a brute force way to attack the issue.

Here is a test:

It is not going as seemless as I wanted. Does anyone here have some suggestions on how to control hundreds of LEDs?

Do you want every one to be individually addressable ??, if so then neopixel (To Borrow an Adafruit brand name) will probably work best, if it is simply a few banks then perhaps a mosfet driver for each…

Yes Turn it into a Christmas / Winter Holiday themed project, now you have 2 months to finish

Cabe, where did you bought the neopixels for this price? These are produced in China nad there are tons of producers of any kind that sell for a more reasonable price.

Can you describe better what your trying to build, how its going to work ?, trying to wire up multiple shift register chips will become very tedious if were talking hundreds so a better approach should be thought of

    looking forward to additional info

NeoPixel (WS2812) would be my suggestion too.

Really simplifies the wiring. Plus you'd get full colour/intensity control.

WS2812 is at 50cents each. Or $100 for 200 Neopixels. This is versus the $12 I paid for 200 ultrabright LEDs.

What is the benefit of the Neopixel vs Traditional LEDs in a simple on and off circuit?

    Peter,

Thanks for the chip suggestions... I think I might use those!

With the neopixel, all you need is to provide a single data stream to the LEDs and power, with regular LEDs you have to build all the interface circuitry and wire it all to the LEDs, the NEOPIXEL has all this done for you

so in monitary terms assuming the neopixel will give you the brighness you need (in addition to full RGB)

if you can build all the interface serial shift registers etc in less than 88$ worth of time ???, with a neopixes, you provide power and a serial data in, and the out to the next pixel thats it

so if you can wire all those led shift registers in an hour (Or 3 if your time is worth 30$ or less an hour, go for the high brighness LEDs ??

I have played with the neo pixels and there great fun and so much you can do with them, just check out the Internet of Holiday Lights winners if you dont believe me image

I have to ask...  not that Halloween has passed, should I even finish this project?

Anyway... as for the lights. They may need to be up to 30 feet apart, around 10 meters.

Let me know all your thoughts.

I think that would be a "Nightmare before christmas" kind of project... it was meant to be scary to some extent...

Back burner for sure, I guess.
