Is there a client for Android, Linux, or other open source OS?

...both perspectives are correct. Microsoft is making strides toward providing a stable IoT platform solution, and security of IoT systems is extremely important. Which is why, providing a secured layer for IoT is a good area to address for development, particularly if it comes from a community like this one, and not just "provided" by a corporation with questionable interests with regards to security.

IoT is a very bad idea.

It will be abused, by the criminals, bad governments, secret police. While this might not strike the fear of god into the typical Brit, spare a thought for those people living in other countries - such as evil regimes like Saudi Arabia or North Korea.
