A member of my hackerspace, Joe Walnes, designed a nifty low-profile breakout board for the Pi called the Pi Crust: http://picru.st/ We discoverted that the Adafruit RTC correctly fits on the Pi Crust i2c header, so it's the most compact way I've seen to add a RTC to the Pi:

Well, it just so happens that Adafruit has posted their own Raspberry Pi DS1307 RTC tutorial, and they don't use any logic level converter for the 5V DS1307 RTC. This is because they instruct:

When building the kit, leave out the 2.2K ohm resistors - by leaving them out, we force the RTC to communicate at 3.3V instead of 5V, which is better for the Pi!

Hi there, a quick question - how do you initially set the date/time of the RTC clock? Or does it auto update from the ntpd service? I can see instructions on setting the time of the Raspberry Pi (or whatever system you're using) FROM the RTC, but not the other way. Also handy for when daylight savings comes around...

The Deadon description says that it uses SPI, no mention of I2C. How easy would that be to implement ?
