I have also at home a Raspberry PI B+ with a 2A USB Power Supply but when I plug a Western Digital "My Passport Ultra" external USB disk 1GB like you did, I hear a tick sound coming from the external HD and the "red" color of the raspberrypi B+ disappears. Of course, I can't mount the external USB disk. Have you change something to your config/Setup to allow the external USB HD to be powered by the Raspberry which is not documented like this (https://projects.drogon.net/testing-setting-the-usb-current-limiter-on-the-raspberry-pi-b/ ? Which 2A Power Supply - Micro USB do you use ?

Remark : I can plug the WD USB disk on my MacBookPro without any issue.

Regards,

Charles

RE: Raspberry Pi B+: setting up a home server with just a USB Harddrive

I would like to make a correction, if I may..

The original Model B/A never included a VGA Port, but I think you meant a Composite port. And it shows the real power of rPi B+. Congrats for coming up with such a nice article.

I would like to know a little more specifics about this project.

As you are using rPi as a file server, I assume it will be capable of streaming HD videos. From the pictures, I assume that you are using ethernet cable to connect rPi to network. So could you please tell us what is the maximum speed you are getting? Because, both ethernet and USB ports are communicating with broadcom chip using same uplink interface( uplink USB ), won't there be a performance degradation? I would like to know how much this is affecting the network speed.

It would be great if you could test( with WiFi also if possible ) this and post the results as I think it will be a very great comparison of B+'s power.

Thanks ahead,

vish
