Very good article. Your questions on memory were interesting to say the least. I can tell you the memory on Pi 1 was changed per this:

Previously the Pi used a Samsung chip, they have now switched to using a chip manufactured by Micron marked with 3KA18 D9QHN and an 'M' logo. This chip is visible in the middle of the photo below mounted on top of the processor using their cleaver package-on-package technology. This RAM chip is still 512Mb in size

This caused a need for new firmware to handle the new chip. Please check which one you tried? Also they used Package on Package (POP):

This saves space, but is more expensive. I do believe the Pi 2 is the ELPDA now and will require firmware upgrade like before:

A good detailed review, good to know overclocking aren't always compatible between versions
