I bet they don't sell many BRICKS these days. It is soo easy to make your 3 to 4 wire adapter, truly child's play.

RE: Essential Raspberry Pi Peripherals #1: GPIO and Other Connectors

The PI does great with multiple devices connected, infact I would find it hard to find a PC that will connect to I2C, SPI and GPIO devices without the help from an external uController these days, my preference is using Windows 10 for IoT on the PI but thats my preference. now if you are refering to USB devices, then I agree but of course vendors are not going to spend the time for such a small market in creating drivers which is why the poor support ont he PI

Looks like Grove (And Many other vendors) have created echo systems with their products to simplify the experementation of numerious devices at the same time, for those that need to keep things simple the Grove board is excelent, I use Breadboards personally and work with the chips directly but then I am a very seasoned EE.

there is nothing wrong with the Grove system or other vendors but eventually you will end up building your own on breadboard or stripboard on your way to a custom PCB for you specific app, and thats the way it is supposed to happen

I also prefer the breadboard because I dont want to stear anyone to a specific vendor system, I create many tutorials on how to use all sorts of chips but keep it focused on interfacing the chips, so less of the LEGO approach and more on custom building.

RE: Essential Raspberry Pi Peripherals #1: GPIO and Other Connectors

This is a fun stereo typical thing with consumer products, not a serious statement, how many times have you had something go wrong, only to find the warranty just expired, over the years I have experianced many, co-incidence sure but funny and somewhat true too, mostly funny (After the fact)

RE: Essential Raspberry Pi Peripherals #1: GPIO and Other Connectors

My macyoda,

[mention:8fb233e8974445138ef0af2b63b49f94:e9ed411860ed4f2ba0265705b8793d05]

You make comments on Grove but clearly don't know anything about Grove, you also don't seem to know much about BRICK, if did you would have never pointed out that it is being DISCONTINUED by its producers!

Just a suggestion, please investigate in depth before deciding what other users know or not. IMO the presumption of knowledge is the better way to make the knowledge curve as slow as possible. And presumption goes in a direction of a very short road.

You screwed up, no question about it, choosing BRICK was a bad choice. Yes, we all have budgets and if we buy JUNK with our budgets we still have JUNK. You should not have chimed in and said you wanted the tutorial for BRICK when Grove is the much better choice.

Again, maybe that something is not clear. Here it is a community not a teachers consortium, nor a place where we all continuously challenge what should be done to be the best.

BRICK is simply unacceptable because it is outdated and not really available anymore. BRICK IS DISCONTINUED BY ITS MAKERS BECAUSE THEY REPLACED IT WITH GROVE!

Just (you said) as an example, you are answering by yourself. If a product is open - in the vision of what is useful for the Makers, DIY, students etc., there is no problem. Open stuff never will be discontinued. If tomorrow Banzi decide to stop the Arduino, or PIC projects and boards stops, as a matter of fact this has no influence. Forums continue, makers continue making and so on. This is what we are pointing on, the persons we are trying to explain something with examples.

As Brick is discontinued, you can just only accept this as a fact You have absolutely no control on it. It is the same as with this board and components you are sponsoring (for your personal needs that we are not interested in). We accept suggestions, as always, and that's all.

If you are so are so sure that this system is so fantastic, and - it seems from your words - essential in a Raspi tutorial set, why you don't come down some steps, make positive and good (hopefully) comments and proposals suggesting the product, maybe in a separate place, explain your reasons, open a discussion to see who knows them and see how they can help you ? This is the kind of behaviour we are happy to see.

Another way - as the community is not a pyramid, there are just some moderators - you can propose in your own blog and start explaining how this fantastic device ecosystem works, with experiments, samples, explaining your experience. This is the way you can create more interest on this thing, involve other users and reciprocally grow your knowledge.

Enrico

RE: Essential Raspberry Pi Peripherals #1: GPIO and Other Connectors

macyoda

I know when people are making things up.

Not sure where you get that conclusion .. the links are there so it's not theory.

Mark made a serious mistake, Mark "price was a deciding factor in my decision."

I don't believe I made a mistake and it certainly wasn't serious.

Price was a deciding factor based on the quantity, budget and the parts needed for our lessons.

GROVE IS MUCH CHEAPER

Some of the prices don't show that to be true.

HAS MUCH GREATER CHOICE

True there are some additional units available.

IS WELL DOCUMENTED

The schematics and documentation are also available.

AND ADHERES TO ITS OWN STANDARD.

I thought there was no standard.

Is it now you confess you work for Seeedstudio ... because unfortunately some of your comments don't stack up.

I have no affilation to ITead and in fact sourced some of the other parts elsewhere as well.

I have purchased materials from Seedstudio and found their service excellent.

Likewise for many other suppliers, either Asian based or American based.

Generally I try to buy at element14 but unfortunately they don't carry these parts.

Mark

RE: Essential Raspberry Pi Peripherals #1: GPIO and Other Connectors

A word of warning

The 30A relay and the latching one are the only two I would consider for any mains related control, if you look at the back of them, they have clear and deliberate seperation of mains and control logic, the one you initially sited is built with a mains capapably relay but in my opinion the fact the power connector is right next to the control connector maks this a dangerious module for mains use. especially for the home / hobby user

RE: Essential Raspberry Pi Peripherals #1: GPIO and Other Connectors

Here are some links that should help:

These guys make the R Pi to Grove shield ...

http://www.dexterindustries.com/GrovePi/get-started-with-the-grovepi/

They have a quick start and tutorial that I will be using, the more the better!.

Here is a list of Grove sensors that they have tested with the shield ...

http://www.dexterindustries.com/GrovePi/supported-sensors/

Grove was invented by Seeedstudios, I believe, and here is their Grove section ...

http://www.seeedstudio.com/depot/category_products?themes_id=1417

When I can, I buy all my Grove parts from EpicTinker.com , and they carry almost EVERYTHING but not the newest stuff, they are usually a little cheaper price and with cheaper shipping and it gets to me very quickly, rather than in 3 weeks that Seeedstudios takes.

As far as I know Brick is an older system that did not hold to their standard very well so problems arose.
