Brainstorm. Self scoring Cornhole aka Bags game.

I have been tossing around the idea (pun intended) on making a self scoring Cornhole game. I think I have pretty much figured out how to tell if the bags from each team has landed on the board. However, when it comes to going through the hole, or missing the board completely I'm at a loss. Any ideas or suggestions on how I might be able to accomplish this? I know I will be using a Raspberry Pi to control everything, and post the score to a monitor.

Maybe some kind of reed switch or magnetic detection. the magnet could be in the bag. and have some kind of sensor like a hall effect sensor - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hall_effect_sensor

If you could put an rfid tag in the bags that could be one approach. Makes it easier to automatically identify bag colour.

That was what I was thinking, however, I don't know how it would be able to tell if it missed the board. I could put another platform under the hole to tell if it made it. But, yeah, still have the problem of completely missing. I know when I play, I do that a lot. image But yeah, we are kind of on the same page on how to go about doing it though. Thanks. image

I know nothing about Hall Effect sensors, reading everything I can about them now. Thank you! If my quick glance over the wiki page is right, this might be a viable solution.

I was thinking of the method using magnets because it does not require

batteries on the bags. from what I understand about RFID is the bags

would have to have a battery. you could possibly have some kind of timer

that if nothing is detected it would time out. but not sure about that.

Hope i can help more at sometime.

After doing some reading, I don't think it would work. 2 flaws I have seen so far. 1. Would not be able to differentiate from players. 2. Seems the hall effects sensors need to be facing a certain direction to be detected correctly. Though this has kind of sent me down a road that may lead to something? We shall see. Thank you. It's a strange problem that I know can be solved, I'm sure very easily. I'm just not seeing it. image

well the simple method would be to have a lever that the bags hit to detect a score. but you will not know what team and you will not be able to detect a miss. So let me think about it and sleep on it. if i have any ideas I will be sure to pass them to you.

You could set a fixed time to launch for each player.... and the total fail could be on timeout ... I mean you can calculate the time the ball spend from "hand to basket" plus the time to recover the ball, etcetera.

I think you can come back with the hall effect with this workaround...

Please excuse me for my bad English

Passive tags do not require batteries.

That is for sure a way to do it. However the game itself is usually played on a nice sunny day with friends while barbequing and drinking some beers.  Adding a timer doesn't seem the best way to do it. Unless I added a button to press at the beginning of each players round. That certainly is an option though. Thank you.
