I had got the same trouble with the pi2, got the solution with the option 4 as the ipod video it works great!

The cables are not all alike even though they have 4 rings on tip:

Check yours in diagram above to correct above.

but clem sir, i have already two 3.5mm stereo to 3 rca av cables but both are not supported. may be this is a same situation as kevin. video as yellow and it is gives some result but not pure.

The HDMI to RCA will not work. For a Raspberry Pi B+ v1 you should try https://blog.adafruit.com/2016/02/05/new-product-av-and-rca-composite-video-audio-cable-for-raspberry-pi/

hello I m new user like you guys to lovely "Raspberry pi 2" ,

i m like you faced the problem in getting output on tv using RCA VIDEO cable,but after some research found a complete solution,

Solution to RCA VIDEO output prolem: Two steps

Step 1:Hardware setup,i,e whatever the rca cable you have bought mostly have the yellow pin with connections in reverse as per Rapberry pi requirement ,

so you the cut yellow wire at distance of 10 cm from male pin and reverse the connection with black to yellow and yellow to black, now you are fit with RCA hardware compatability.

Step 2: If you connect Raspy to tv powered on and then power on your raspy,if you dont see anything on tv (with AV screen on ,for which the Raspy has been connected)

go for "config.txt" editing ,Add the folliwing lines of code, (note:if a line of code already exist dont repeat it)

sdtv_mode=2

hdmi_ignore_hotplug=1

#hdmi_force_hotplug=1

#note above lines added to have composite display,and hdmi will not come,if you want hdmi display on,comment above two lines,and uncomment third line.

i think i have given a quick solution for the problem of not having output on CRT TV using RCA Video cable .

If your problem is solved please comment out,or for any queries.

Its a Sanyo and I also tried on my son's no name CRT TV with the same result. Anything else I use on those TVs works fine. What kind of settings would need to be adjusted?

Yellow is video and need to adjust resolution for the type of tv. Do you know the make and model?

I have tried all 3. The yellow is what shows the jumbled mess. I can barely make out the RetroPie boot screen. The others don't have any effect on the screen (completely black).

Looking at picture #2 must be GND and the yellow can be either video or red is video. So try both. The audio is what left over as over.

Thanks for responding. If I understand correct your asking if I plugged the R, Y, & W plugs to the corresponding R, Y, & W jacks? I did, R to R, Y to Y & W to W in AV1 on my CRT TV.

II tried to get the RP2 to out A/V via RCA once again. I am using the cables you have suggested. I went ahead and tried on the other 2 A/V jacks my TV has and still the TV sees that something is there but nothing is seen on screen or heard. I then tried my bedroom CRT TV and I get a jumbled mess of a picture and a loud buzz or hum like sound.

Any ideas? Anyone?

I just got in the cable Clem Martins suggested but still no RCA output. I have looked thru RetroPie settings but do not see anything to change the Video out. I did see where to force audio thru HDMI (I changed that a while ago).

FYI, (this might help you understand the problem, helping to fix it yourself).

So the pi effectively has two "output devices" for each of "video" and "audio". You more or less have to TELL it what output device to use. There will not be any video on the RCA out if you don't tell the 'pi to do RCA instead of HDMI. Similarly the AUDIO can go to HDMI while you want analog out. The audio is capable of switching dynamically. But the video more or less needs to be configured during boot.

One more thing, hold 3 key down on each boot up for PAL. Hold 4 key for NTSC ... This can change output from HDMI to RCA. later, you can change config.txt

Then GND is first one and not second one on plug where the Pi expects it and you need a proper plug. Where did you get this cable?

I have tried all 3 in the video input jack of my TV. Each was pluged in before the Pi was booted. No picture on any.

Does your pi side look like this?

The problem is 3 types. Only if GND on second ring will this work with Pi. Sometimes the video is not yellow, but red( or white). Try all other two and report which works.

If you have a camcorder cable then red is video
