So I have had my PMS up and running for about a year on RPi 3 with Raspbian. My one discouragement is that I can't get the Pi to show up on my local network. I can ping the Pi from my other computers (Ubuntu and Mac) and I can ping the others from the Pi, but the Pi doesn't show up in my network. The interesting thing is that I have another RPi in my travel trailer running LIbreELEC and Kodi. It shows up just fine on the network.

This is not such a big deal, except when it comes to adding media to the PMS. Currently, I have to unplug the HDD from the Pi and attach it to another computer to load media. Then I reconnect the HDD to the Pi. I do have the Plex photo sync working with my iPhone. I also have checked the "Enable iTunes channel" box in Plex, but without being able to see the my Mac on the network from the Pi, I cannot specify an "iTunes library XML path."

So, what do I need to do to get Samba share working? I have spent days fiddling and reading about how to make Samba work on the Pi with Raspbian, but so far no joy. In checking the smb.conf file I found that I have the workgroup set correctly, and wins support = yes. There is a line that says: "wins server = w.x.y.z." It is commented out with a semi colon. Do I need to uncomment the line and change it to "wins server = raspberrypi"?

One more thing: I have tried at least a dozen different things in smb.conf, and all the tutorials say that when I am done I should set a password by running

$ sudo smbpasswd -a Pi (then enter my password twice)

Every time I run the command, I get the message

sudo: smbpasswd: command not found

I'm afraid that if I do get the Pi to show on the network, I will be locked out because I don't have a password registered.

If you can offer any help on any of these issues, I will be eternally grateful!

Thanks,

Tom

RE: A more powerful Plex media server using Raspberry Pi 3

Hi and thank you for a great tutorial.

i think i messed up at the point where i should fixate my IP.

i type down my IP adress (192.168.1.17) and did what it said, when i rebooted my Pi I had now this IP instead 192.168.1.18, i dont think it mather because i can access my Plex on both IP adresses, but when i type " I got my Pi3 up and running with Plex installed in under two hours!

That being said there were a couple things I had to change to get it to work right:

1.) First thing - make sure your keyboard is configured correctly! I didn't and ended up having to redo several steps (my keyboard was set to English - Great Britain instead of English - US)

2.) If you are using a Large (>3TB) storage device you really need to install exfat (sudo apt-get install exfat-fuse exfat-utils) This makes it so easy to use the WD My Book (mine is 4TB).

(Caution: Make SURE your drive is actually formatted with exfat however before setting all that up - the drive might be GPT / EXT4 - Run sudo df -h and see what it is)

This would make the FSTAB entry look like this: /dev/sda1 /mnt/library exfat defaults 0 0

RE: A more powerful Plex media server using Raspberry Pi 3

Followed the steps, no issues or errors. No other ports are being used.

Checking on the service status I see....

[embed:dc8ab71f-3b98-42d9-b0f6-e21e02a0f8e2:3ef06e6b-9b7d-4651-b12d-db8be7f5e991:type=text&text=pi%40raspberrypi%3A%7E+%24+sudo+service+plexmediaserver+status%0A%E2%97%8F+plexmediaserver.service+-+LSB%3A+Plex+Media+Server%0A+++Loaded%3A+loaded+%28%2Fetc%2Finit.d%2Fplexmediaserver%29%0A+++Active%3A+active+%28exited%29+since+Sun+2017-04-16+22%3A29%3A57+UTC%3B+28s+ago%0A++Process%3A+1112+ExecStop%3D%2Fetc%2Finit.d%2Fplexmediaserver+stop+%28code%3Dexited%2C+status%3D0%2FSUCCESS%29%0A++Process%3A+1122+ExecStart%3D%2Fetc%2Finit.d%2Fplexmediaserver+start+%28code%3Dexited%2C+status%3D0%2FSUCCESS%29%0A%0A%0AApr+16+22%3A29%3A56+raspberrypi+su%5B1128%5D%3A+Successful+su+for+plex+by+root%0AApr+16+22%3A29%3A56+raspberrypi+su%5B1128%5D%3A+%2B+%3F%3F%3F+root%3Aplex%0AApr+16+22%3A29%3A56+raspberrypi+su%5B1128%5D%3A+pam_unix%28su%3Asession%29%3A+session+opened+for+user+plex+by+%28uid%3D0%29%0AApr+16+22%3A29%3A56+raspberrypi+su%5B1128%5D%3A+pam_unix%28su%3Asession%29%3A+session+closed+for+user+plex%0AApr+16+22%3A29%3A57+raspberrypi+plexmediaserver%5B1122%5D%3A+Starting+Plex+Media+Server%3A+done%0AApr+16+22%3A29%3A57+raspberrypi+systemd%5B1%5D%3A+Started+LSB%3A+Plex+Media+Server.]

If I run sudo /etc/init.d/plexmediaserver stop it says it's not running, even after running sudo /etc/init.d/plexmediaserver start. So some dependency is clearly not running....

sudo /usr/sbin/start_pms returns an illegal instruction error.

Also tried changing permissions for the plex user and changing the plex server to run as the pi user, neither worked.

Update: Tried again and it seems to have worked... same steps, different results. Yay Linux?
