I also created a simple stepper motor driver and used some function blocks to show the output values as statuses.

It looks likes there is a solution to the horrible syntax issue in scratch. Snap! (Build Your Own Blocks) 4.0 is pretty much identical to scratch to but it allows you to abstract away any techy details. So even if your block was a one line broadcast you could still wrap that as a "Pin" or "LED" to make it easier for your young programmers.

It's also in Javascript rather than Flash so that's got to be a winner too.

Glad that you have a go at Node-Red, [mention:4236e66f810f492faa977aafb3ee70a6:e9ed411860ed4f2ba0265705b8793d05]. I briefly tried it and didn't fall in love. I hope that your story changes that.

I could use a payload/message driven solution for some of my designs.

So I'll be lurking, with the hope that your posts convince me ...
