Introduction
The XR-1000 is an easy-to-build, hopefully easy-to-use, Python-operated, open-source/open-hardware hackable eXperimental Robot

RE: XR-1000 Chassis and Electromechanicals: Putting it Together

The pen capability didn't get much attention to design, so I'm still working through that problem, but basically the current thinking is that part of the design is likely to look like this:

Two boards with holes suitable for the desired pen can be fitted on plastic spacer/stand-offs above and below the chassis, and the pen will touch the paper using its own weight as well as a cable gland weight. The servo will push the pen up, using most likely thick fishing-line filament behaving like the inner part of a bicycle brake cable, pushing against the gland.

RE: XR-1000 Chassis and Electromechanicals: Putting it Together

Nice use of an aluminum PCB service. I definitely need to try something like this in a project.

Pretty brave to bend it - I would have worried about it being too brittle.

RE: XR-1000 Chassis and Electromechanicals: Putting it Together

Very nice! And a great price for a light weight chassis.

Those boards look awesome, I think that I might try some of those for panels.

RE: XR-1000 Chassis and Electromechanicals: Putting it Together

Hi Shabaz,

That is a really nice design! A 3D printed shell with an R2D2 type body would be fun. I'm interested in how well a square shaped path is reproduced on on repeating loops as this would indicate how good the pen bot writing might be. The stepper motors should help - I've used DC motors in my robots and encoders are necessary to get good turns. I am adding this to my list of things to make. Really nice.

May I ask if this is an Aluminum PCB (copper foil layer) or aluminum with screen printing?

RE: XR-1000 Chassis and Electromechanicals: Putting it Together

Fascinating. There are enough holes in the board to use cable ties to secure the battery.

RE: XR-1000 Chassis and Electromechanicals: Putting it Together

Very interesting technique to bend the aluminum PCB. I guess solder could be used to mechanically reinforce the structure too.

RE: XR-1000 Chassis and Electromechanicals: Putting it Together

Great build, but you know you need to go with a remote keypad with a wireless interface.

You could also do a POV camera.

Well done.

RE: XR-1000 Chassis and Electromechanicals: Putting it Together

"...I hope to build a pen mechanism..."

Here is how it was done on the pen plotter / scanner from the original Fischertechnik Computing set:

and how it was done on the Economatics 'BBC Buggy':

RE: XR-1000 Chassis and Electromechanicals: Putting it Together

This is a pretty cool robotic platform. I am looking forward to seeing where you go with this project.
