Hi Frederick,

I really like your project. I like the John above seem to run into some difficulties. I deployed the code and saw the unicorn (yeah!) but then when I start the raspi, I only see the balena splash screen. No error messages or anything. The balena site says everything is fine and I can make the pi flash its lights on command. So I guess this connection works.

I highlighted one error message. Could it be that it did not download the images from the folder. There should be at least and index until image_list[8].

I believe I've followed every step to a T, I see the unicorn, all the variables are defined (except for IFTTT because I don't need to know which photos my parents like). However, after I see the Balena splash logo, all I get is a blank screen. Did the switch from Resin to Balena make this project unsustanible or something? The last chunk of the log is here:

EDIT: I had an incorrect DropBox link and it was trying to render non image file types. Now I am seeing the images. I am however seeing some that have been rotated incorrectly... 90 degrees askew or upside down. Where are the images stored once they are downloaded by the PI?

I just finished setting this project up. When the Pi boots, I see all of the boot text on the screen, and then the resin.io logo then nothing. When I go to my resin.io dashboard, look at the device summary, log I see this:

Experimenting with a button to force reloading images in case a FRAME_OWNER wants to see new images without waiting for the normal refresh cycle.

Duplicated the send_event action:

def force_reload():

img = ImageTk.PhotoImage(Image.open("/usr/src/app/icons/reload_on.png"))

reload_button.configure(image=img)

reload_button.image = img

root.after(100, initialize) # seems to need a little time to refresh the button before starting the reload images action

At the end of update_image, added this to turn off the reload button:

img = ImageTk.PhotoImage(Image.open("/usr/src/app/icons/reload_off.png"))

reload_button.configure(image=img)

reload_button.image = img

And added these definitions after initialize():

reload_icon = ImageTk.PhotoImage(Image.open("/usr/src/app/icons/reload_off.png"))

reload_button = Button(right_column, image=reload_icon, borderwidth=0, background="black", foreground="white", activebackground="black", activeforeground="white", highlightthickness=0, command=force_reload)

reload_button.pack(fill=BOTH, expand=1)

Finally created reload on and off icons and put them in the icons folder.

Not sure if this button will be useful or just an added complication to a straight forward UI. Plan to use for a bit to find out but, like you said, it would be better to trigger it automatically when Dropbox gets an update. There is a notification in the Windows Action Center for Dropbox events, so it must be possible.

If immediate reload is required, a lazy work around might be to just restart all applications in the resin.io dashboard when revising content, otherwise just waiting for the download interval to expire is a sure thing.

A great project. I can see us needing multiple frames as our granddad takes more pictures than we do. I agree with the others a very marketable product and Resin.io looks useful.

This is a brilliant project! I'm going to give it a go, and possibly roll out a few of these for our family, since we're all scattered around Europe and the US. I've plenty of experience with Raspberry Pis but haven't used resin.io before (looks very cool!).

I had one question though, which (I think) I've found the answer for myself (but would appreciate you confirming!). I'm sharing it here in case anyone else has the same (probably dumb) question. Your documentation shows how to set WiFi up before flashing the SD card, but if I'm setting it up at home and then delivering it to my family member's house, I obviously need to change those details at some point. My initial guess was that I could change it from the resin.io dashboard (obviously before taking it out of my home), or in the worst case (eg a family member changed their router without warning me) maybe get them to mount the SD card on another computer and tweak a config file somewhere (that'd be a fun tech support call with my dad!). Fortunately, resin.io definitely allows the second option (the first one seems a little clunky, but I don't see why it wouldn't work), but best of all it also lets you configure multiple SSIDs/PSKs, as long as you're comfortable editing a json file. The documentation (for anyone else wondering - I'm sure you've got it covered!) is here: (EDIT: I had an old link here because I'm a doofus. Once again, a wonderful idea and really sweet implementation: I'm ordering the screen and enclosure (already got a spare Pi, or three, to test this out on) right now!

Neat project, I'm working on building this for Christmas gifts.

There is a small typo in the documentation of env variable "CARROUSEL_INTERVAL_SECONDS" as is the program but "CAROUSEL_..." in the Configuration & Environment Variables section above, after matching the code error went away.

Now debugging why the temp.zip file won't unzip, complains about not finding the directory, will let you know what I figure out.
