Your articles have been a great help to me in my project this summer. Had a raspberry pi 2 laying around and decided to use it in the garden. I ended up getting the UV sensor you used, works well. However the soil sensors for me cheap out quite quickly. I found it best to spend few extra $ and get capacitive sensors with resistant coatings (about 9$ ea). Helps prevent the corrosion.

I put my project open source on github. Check it out here. You might find it useful if you continue your project. I made a little package that loads from a config file to dynamically load sensors on the system. It helps take some of the leg work out of setting up the sensor and pulling its reading. Easy to expand or reduce based on your size project too.

Looking forward to more great articles.

RE: IoT Garden Project 1: How does your IoT garden grow?

Very nice. I started learning electronics with a very similar moisture probe.

RE: IoT Garden Project 1: How does your IoT garden grow?

The Velleman datasheet says 5V for the moisture sensor. Presumably it worked ok for you on 3.3V. What's it got on it? Is it just a single transistor and a few resistors or is there something more on there?

If you're going to leave it outside for any length of time you might want to coat it with something.

RE: IoT Garden Project 1: How does your IoT garden grow?

Like this project.
