In Arkansas we have a great geocaching community and a state organization, that I am a member of, to fully take advantage of this project and it's outcome. I also have several friends that are involved in the Maker movement with access to those talents and tools if need be. My goal is to do as Christopher has already published, but make it a fun, entertaining conversation piece to take to events and possibly release out into the wild and see what happens. This should help #1 promote geocaching by showing new potential cacher's what can be done with very few parts and #2 show them it can be done cheaply without tying up their cellular phone or having a dedicated GPS device.

Where my wife and I like to cache (in our states vast forest with little cell phone signals) we often find that her groundspeak app on her phone can not get signal to upload the cache to her device. Luckily we have one of the Best (and lowest cost) consumer GPSr's on the market (Magellan GC that is specifically made for geocaching). But this project will allow us to go one step further in allowing me to show how easy it is to combine these two worlds together, possibly with a way using the groundspeak API service to get local cache data through queries. If this thing can query(via wifi hotspot) based on it's location, it would be easy to pass to other members to have them take it to events with them as a display piece. Also This could also allow us to make specific geotrails for a member to solve like a puzzle before the device allows them full access.

I will be documenting my progress here and possibly on my YouTube channel for fun (if I can make my workspace more presentable...too much stuff on my desk).

Right now I have a rough idea on how to make it easy to use, we'll just have to see if I can get it to work like I envision in my head.

Thanks again for this opportunity.

RE: Announcing the Winners of the Raspberry Pi 2 GPS Kits!

Have fun guys,

I've tried some of the published Geocaching apps and they were sending me in circles.

Scott

RE: Announcing the Winners of the Raspberry Pi 2 GPS Kits!

Congratulations to the winners.

I look forward to seeing your blogs as you put these great devices to use.

DAB

RE: Announcing the Winners of the Raspberry Pi 2 GPS Kits!

I am honored Element 14 has chosen me to join them in this exciting venture, and congratulate my fellow winners of this amazing kit! Thank you so very much for this opportunity!

One of the features I want to add to this kit is the ability to read and write to NFC tags as well has read (and possibly print) QR Codes. The NFC should be pretty simple, and reading QR Codes with a RP camera should be easy peasy. While the NOOB software is terrific, I'd love to get Android on this if possible, since apps for Maps, Geocaching, QR Codes, and NFC tags are readily available and programming for it would offer plenty of resources.

Further, I plan on 3D-Printing a custom case for this, and show local entrepreneurs and makers that a customized GPS-enabled device is affordable and absolutely possible. We have local interest in geolocation services as well as many historical and artistic places of interest, all with substantial heritage. The applications for this device extend far beyond Geocaching, but that is the most immediate and most interesting current use of this technology.

My exploits and blunders will be recorded for posterity and public humiliation and relayed on my social media networks. I plan on making an "Instructable" as well as at least one YouTube video, though I plan at least a few with the different field uses of this kit.

The Maker Space with which I am involved will also benefit. I get to show them first-hand geolocation and geocaching while I build this and demonstrate it to my fellow Makers. We have an "Oen Biuld Night" that is open to the public, which will allow me a wider audience for building this and getting it operational in just a couple of hours. I plan on documenting that event as well.

The local Geocaching group here is quite active, and many will get to see this astounding kit in action. At least a couple won Element14 Travel Bugs, and I can't wait to get this and one of the TBs together for a little photo shoot. [View:/resized-image/__size/16x16/__key/commentfiles/f7d226abd59f475c9d224a79e3f0ec07-9a5ad5fe-ab3a-4fc0-bf26-7793fafed5db/contentimage_5F00_930.png:16:16] It will be great fun, too, to hand this over to one of my GC friends and have them use it to find one of my planned Arduino Nano-based digital geocaches; I may even put a power output from this to connect to those Nano-based caches to provide those caches with 5VDC!

If I can get some Makers interested in Geocaching, and some Cachers interested in Making, then it will be a success. Moreover, if I can get local artists, businesses, museums and such interested in pursuing geolocation as way to increase visibility and public participation (which many have already expressed interest) then I hope I can team them together with Makers and Geocachers to successfully make our area a pioneer in geolocation tourism and education.

It's ambitious, but I have two great groups of members who'll love to be involved as well as a community ready for this type of device.

I'll follow up with my assorted social media and blog posts soon. Right now, I have some serious planning to do before the kit arrives, and probably a few add-on purchases as well!

Thank you again element14 and [mention:e533a280d27446f88d5eca64e725a4fb:e9ed411860ed4f2ba0265705b8793d05] for this privilege. You will be delighted with the results!

Cheers,

Robert W.
