Announcement: Introducing the Reliable RoadTester Badge in November

Hi All.

I wanted to make a brief announcement about something we are rolling out in November.

We will be adding a Reliable Roadtester Badge to all the other badges a member can earn on the element14 community.

The badge is our way of saying Thank You to the roadtesters. We wanted to officially recognize those member who have really put fantastic efforts into doing roadtests.

This badge will be automatically awarded when a member completes and publishes three roadtest reviews on the official roadtest review form.

If you have completed 3 roadtest reviews already, you will be awarded the badge automatically.

Thanks.

I believe that the comments section of each roadtest is where the community can provide feedback to an individual roadtester. The feedback can range from compliments for a very good review, to suggestions…

I have been suggesting this approach for road testers for many years. DAB

No one is going to shame people. But a roadtester has to realize that while we do not on element14 conduct official "peer reviews," which are common in the scientific and technical circles, element14 does…

Great idea Randall!  We can also have an "Unreliable RoadTester Badge" for anyone who does not complete a roadtest or creates unacceptable quality roadtests.image

There's definitely a problem sometimes where a road test is technically "done" but I'm sure it's way below what the road tester must have said they were going to do. In my opinion, a road test shouldn't be considered done unless the tester has materially met what they claimed they would do when applying. A public shaming of substandard work might be a little harsh - although I must admit I'm guilty of having given a couple of people a hard time over poor road tests in the past.

Maybe a successful applicant should have to publish their application (or the gist of it anyway) alongside their road test? Or there could be some other way of determining if it's "done" rather than just relying a click of the publish button.

No one is going to shame people. But a roadtester has to realize that while we do not on element14 conduct official "peer reviews," which are common in the scientific and technical circles, element14 does have informal peer reviews in the form of the comments section and our messaging system.

Since our reviews are public, our platform invites commenting and conversation. Thus, a roadtester (especially a first time roadtester) should realize that just like any academic paper that is up for a peer review, a roadtest review will be read and examined. If something doesn't make sense or is plainly inaccurate, they will usually get a comment. I suggest when a first time roadtester gets a comment, especially by a knowledgeable member or myself, they should attempt to understand the comment and review what they have written or what data they have provided. Then move forward, accordingly.

That's great feedback Randall. I'd like to add that it's particularly helpful for Roadtesters to prescribe their approach as often peers have expectations that are often counter to the approach taken by the Roadtester and if a peer is unaware of the roadtester's approach (which tends to be in their application and thus not open to public) they may think that the roadtester has gone off track. It may even help first timer roadtesters that their application is peer reviewed and a steer given on how they may better approach things to address their audience when it comes to writing up their report.
