How to solder the LEDs

As mentioned in previous posts I found some nice aluminium LED pcb's on eBay. Here is how they look like, front and back:

image

LEDs can easily be hand soldered to these boards following those steps:

  1. apply some solder to the pads, using a normal soldering iron.
  2. apply a little bit of flux.
  3. place the LED (be aware of proper polarity, the - is marked on the LED.
  4. put the PCB on a hot electric (ceramic) cooktop. (be aware that an induction cooktop would not work!)
  5. wait until the solder melts and the LED sinks onto the board.
  6. Ready! image

Here is a video for clarification:

Testing

I also tested the LED, by connecting it to a current source as can be seen in the video below.

The LEDs are rated at 1000mA peak, 700mA continuous. Here is the list of forward current versus voltage, from the video:

Forward Current [mA]Forward Voltage [V]
1002.82
2002.94
3003.04
4003.09
5003.14
6003.17
7003.19

This more or less matches the specs from the datasheet:

Left measured, right specs from datasheet.

My next blog will describe connection of the LEDs to the TPS92512 EVM, and possibly the LaunchPad.

Stay tuned.

I received my PCBs today too This is an interesting way to solder LEDs, good idea! I used hot air station and some solder paste to solder some of my LEDs for initial test run.
