Back in the 70's I did a lot of work on antenna systems, and the reflectometer was a super quick and easy way to troubleshoot. We had several antenna array system, with up to 16 elements, along with 100's of RF switches and trying to find the faulty element/switch/cable/connector was relatively easy. We would attach the reflectometer to each of the antenna leads in turn and look for unexpected impeadance changes (open/short/leakage/etc.). We could also manually control the various RF switches and verify proper impedances. We would typically have multiple failures after an intense electrical storm, causing bad readings or outright failures. We would then travel out to the faulty towers and work out the issues.
