As part of an upcoming project, I feel it would be useful to record my screen and also include a picture-in-picture view of the board I'm working with. I've seen other do this - probably including here if I have a search. has anyone got any tip for doing this? Any software that makes it easy? I mainly use Windows 10 and I'm planning to try the built-in "game recording mode" but I suspect that might not work with a camera too.
The modern approach is NDI, there is a plugin for it for OBS Studio, if it's desired to use that.
The benefit of NDI is that you can pull in almost any source, so you no longer need to have separate solutions for (say) webcam feed, video camera focussed on circuit board, live desktop and so on, they can all use the same method.
Although the hardware is expensive, no hardware needs to be purchased if you have a webcam or a mobile phone. There is free software that will convert the mobile phone into an NDI source, so you can just point it at yourself or your circuit board or whatever, and it comes up as a source within OBS Studio, just like any other source. This scales so you could use a couple of mobile phones too if desired (perhaps the quality is better than webcam, on any phone that isn't too old, but this is a guess).
From my perspective the app is quite nice and clean (I have the Android app on my phone, it looks like this), nothing is perfect for all scenarios, for instance I wish the app gave me more control, but maybe it's worth exploring (I intend to use it for some other purposes):
