We're looking for engineers to take ams OSRAM's AS1170 Evaluation Kit for a spin, stretch its legs and evaluate what it can do. We'll send you the hardware, for free. You test it out and once you've posted your review, it's yours to keep forever.

What is the AS1170 Evaluation Kit?

The AS1170 Evaluation Kit (AS1170 EVK) integrates the ams AS1170 with 4 on-board 850nm Infrared (IR) LEDs. Intended to drive High Current LEDs and VCSELs, the AS1170 is a DCDC step up converter designed to easily integrate into noise-sensitive RF systems. Controlled by I2C, the AS1170 EVK is outfitted with an IR LED break-out board connector also included within the kit, connection points for an external lab power supply and the included ESP32 for programming and control. The break-out board includes solder points for different LED footprints from ams OSRAM and other LED and VCSEL types.

Equipment You'll Need to Try It

To try out the AS1170 Evaluation Kit, you'll need the following:

  • A computer capable of connecting to the ESP32 S2 DevKit M1 via USB Type-A.
  • The Arduino IDE for writing MCU Sketches.
  • A digital camera such as that on a phone, laptop or tablet where you can take video to verify the IR LEDs are working.

You may also find it helpful to have the following equipment on-hand:

  • A Soldering Iron and associated solder, suiitable to perform surface mount soldering.
  • A laboratory power supply and cables, capable of supplying 4.4 V.

RoadTester Tasks and Instructions

  1. Unbox and explore the Evaluation Kit following the available Quick Start Guide.
  2. Try the kit as-it-comes, using the available software to try out the kit's capabilities.
  3. Run the example code available to trigger integrated LEDs.
  4. Develop your own program, using the Evaluation kit to complete a task.
  5. Document your experience in a review, including where the kit was strong and where it could improve.

If you have a project to use the kit for, that would be ideal as a test case for the review. Otherwise use the kit as it comes and test out what you can do with the included documentation, hardware and available software. Show to the reader what will likely be their experience using the kit for the first time. Text, pictures, video and/or any other media, so the reader understands what is involved in using the product.
