What were the biggest problems encountered?: Not the biggest but the problem which i faced is finding the right resources to get started with the kit since there were a lot of references available.
Detailed Review:
The Renesas Solution Starter Kit for RX23E-A is an evaluation board that allows you to quickly and easily evaluate the RX23E-A microcontroller. The kit includes the RX23E-A microcontroller, peripheral circuits for sensor measurement, a K-type thermocouple, and a GUI-based PC tool program. This makes it easy to evaluate the measurements of thermocouples, RTD, and strain gauges, which are typical sensors in industrial equipment.

To get started, I have referred to the quick start guide. Upon opening the kit, below are the items which I received.
Below are the terminals and jumper on the RSSKRX23E-A board.
To power up this device there are two ways, either using the system power supply or USB Bus Power supply. By default, the power supply setting is "System Power Supply". I have decided to power up the device using the USB Bus Power supply. To achieve this I have followed the following configuration.
The table below shows the power selection methods.
Once the jumper is set to this position, the board is ready to power up. But before that, need to download the PC tool program. This program can be downloaded from here. After downloading the file, extract it to a folder and the below files should be listed. Click the file pointed by the arrow in the figure below to launch the PC tool program.
During the first try, I could not get any reading even though the connection was successful. Later after some tweaking, I was able to get the reading. The video shows the result.
Overall, I personally feel that this board has a lot of potential to be explored. The test which I have done is merely very little. There are many different types of tests that can conducted using this board for different applications and purposes.
