RoadTest FAQs

1. What is a RoadTest?

The element14 RoadTest is a product review program administered by the element14 Community. It is a review based on actual testing and experiments. RoadTests go beyond subjective web reviews by providing an objective opinion about a product's quality, ease of use, documentation, and performance. Beyond a simple “star” review, a RoadTest is a detailed review that shares "the experience of the product" through videos, charts, screenshots, tables, graphs, and other multimedia. A roadtest is not necessarily a project where the goal is to build new prototype or discover a new application for the product; rather, the primary focus of a roadtest is to review the product (i.e., Does it work? Is the documentation useful? Is it easy to use?)

RoadTest applicants compete to receive a RoadTest product. Applicants undergo extensive pre-screening by the element14 RoadTest Program Manager prior to selection to ensure the best qualified and most reliable applicants are chosen as official roadtesters. Once the Roadtest Program Manager selects the official roadtesters, they will be notified by email. The product or kit is shipped to the roadtesters at no charge. Roadtesters keep the product after they publish a review on element14. The Roadtesters have 60-days from receipt of the product to perform testing and write a review on element14.

2. Who can apply for a RoadTest?

Any element14 member can apply to a RoadTest. If you are not a member, go here to register.

3. How much does a RoadTest cost?

For members of the element14 community, there is no charge to participate in the RoadTest program. However, the program is supported by the sponsors of the program. Without their financial support, the program would not exist in its present form. This is why each review is important to the entire program.

4. How long do I have to complete a RoadTest?

You have 60 days from the receipt of the product to complete the RoadTest and submit your review.

5. Do you provide the test equipment for me to RoadTest the product?

While element14 provides the product to be RoadTested, it does not provide the test equipment to perform the testing. the roadtest applicant must have the main resources the complete a review. On a case by case basis, the RoadTest program Manager has provide complementary parts to enhance a roadtest. Examples would include a cable, an expansion word, etc.

6. What do I need to deliver to you to show I completed the RoadTest?

You need only complete a RoadTest review and post it on the element14 Community website. The RoadTest Program Manager tracks the roadtest reviews and monitors when they are posted. Moreover, the RoadTest Program Team conducts follow up emails over the course of the roadtest to ensure the roadtest is on track and can be delivered in the 60-day timeframe.

7. Is there a limit to the number of RoadTests for which I can apply?

There is no limit to the number of RoadTests for which you can apply. However, The RoadTest Program Manager tries to limit the number of reviews that a member can be working on. He attempts to follow the one-review-at-a-time rule.

8. How will my RoadTest Review be used? Who will read it?

RoadTests reviews are available for anyone to read on the element14 Community website. They will be read by community members, potential customers, the manufacturer, and other interested parties. The sponsor of the product eagerly waits and reads all the reviews of their product. If they have a questions, the roadtester will be contacted by the RoadTest Program Manager.

9. How will I know I have been selected to RoadTest the product for which I applied?

The RoadTest Program Manager will contact you when you are selected. You do not need to contact the Program Manager. We will reach out to the selected finalists on the element14 community for additional information, as well as to confirm their interest in participating. Failure to respond to this message will result in your application being eliminated, and we will chose another participant.

10. What do I do if I am not selected as a RoadTester?

This question can be answered in several ways. If you are asking what can you do about a roadtest that you were not selected for, the answer is nothing for that roadtest. You may want to review your application entry form and ask yourself how you could have made it a more persuasive entry. Keep on trying by applying to other roadtests. Moreover, another thing you can do is participate in other programs on the element14 community, which typically earn you participation points which the RoadTest Program manager looks at during the selection process. The final thing you can do is to log into the element14 community frequently. Members who are logging into the community frequently and more often selected as roadtesters than those who do not. Roadtests are an activity of element14. Hence, it is a program for members who want to participate in our community.

11. If I am selected as a RoadTester, can I keep the product I tested?

Yes. That's the great benefit of being a participant in the RoadTest program. You get the product for free in exchange for your objective feedback.

12. What happens if I don't provide a RoadTest review?

Some RoadTesters are unable to provide a review for a variety of reasons. If you are a RoadTester and you are unable to complete the review, please contact the RoadTest Program Manager as soon as possible so he is aware of your situation. We may be able to offer you a solution, including additional time if necessary. If you do not provide a RoadTest Review within 60 Days and you do not contact us regarding your situation, you may be barred from participating in any future RoadTest.

13. Will I receive a Badge for my RoadTest review or application?

We have introduced rewards for applying for a RoadTest! You'll receive a number of points for applying for the RoadTest, upon successful completion of a RoadTest review once you've received your hardware, you'll be awarded with points and a badge.

14. Are there any restrictions on countries or nationalities who can apply?

Typically, our roadtests are global. So, they are not restricted. However, on rare occasions, a product can only operate in a specific region of the world. For those roadtests we would either limit it to a region or strive to get a version that can operate in other regions.

Thank you for your interest in applying for an element14 RoadTest. The RoadTest application form requires some effort, planning, and strategy to complete. This document will give you some tips on how to write the RoadTest entry form so you have a better chance of being selected.

This article will walk you through the process of writing and completing the RoadTest entry form.

Once you have logged into the element14 Community, go to the RoadTest & Reviews group, which lists the RoadTests that are currently open for enrollment.

Click on a RoadTest that you would like to apply for. When the page loads, you will see the following on the righthand side of the page:

Click the enroll button, and the "e14 entry Form" will load. This is the form you must complete to apply to a specific RoadTest.

Instructions and Tips

1. Answer all questions. Incomplete entry forms are ineligible.

2. All questions highlighted with a red asterisk must be completed.

2. Describe Your Technical Background: Answer this question relative to the product(s) and describe what knowledge and experience you possess that makes you qualified to test this product.

3. Summarize Your Test Procedure

4. Upload a long-form, detailed test procedure using the Supplementary File feature of this form. This document MUST be in MS Word.

5. At the bottom of the form, click the blue Publish/Update button. You will get a popup box indicating that your application entry form has been included in our application database.

Specific Instructions

Please provide your first and last name, which are required to ship a product to you. Please write your name as it appears in your element14 Community Profile. Please use the email address of your account.

Please provide your shipping address. We only ship to addresses that are listed in your element14 Community account. We do not ship to random addresses. We do not ship with instructions to leave outside house or apartment. If you have moved, please update your address listed in your element14 profile.

We would like to know your work status because it gives us an understanding of your availability to conduct the roadtest and publish a review.

If you are currently a RoadTester, all reviews must be posted before you are given another product to review. The element14 Community does not provide everything to conduct a RoadTest.

You need to have the resources (test equipment, soldering stations, electrical hardware) to conduct your testing.

You must agree to our terms and conditions.

THIS SECTION IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF A ROADTEST ENTRY FORM.

Both the RoadTest Program Manager and the sponsor place the most weight on the above questions. An applicant should be as detailed as possible when answering these questions. The most detailed answers tend to get the most attention. The uploaded test procedure should be written as a project plan/proposal. If you do not provide a detailed test procedure, your entry form will be scored as ineligible.

Once you have logged into the element14 Community, go to the RoadTest & Reviews group, which lists the RoadTests that are currently open for enrollment.

Click on a RoadTest that you would like to apply for. When the page loads, you will see the following on the righthand side of the page:

Click the enroll button, and the "e14 entry Form" will load. This is the form you must complete to apply to a specific RoadTest.

Instructions and Tips

1. Answer all questions. Incomplete entry forms are ineligible.

2. All questions highlighted with a red asterisk must be completed.

2. Describe Your Technical Background: Answer this question relative to the product(s) and describe what knowledge and experience you possess that makes you qualified to test this product.

3. Summarize Your Test Procedure

4. Upload a long-form, detailed test procedure using the Supplementary File feature of this form. This document MUST be in MS Word.

5. At the bottom of the form, click the blue Publish/Update button. You will get a popup box indicating that your application entry form has been included in our application database.

Specific Instructions

You need to have the resources (test equipment, soldering stations, electrical hardware) to conduct the roadtest. On rare occasions, RoadTesters have requested additional products to be added to the roadtest. If this makes sense to include, we try to update the kit prior to shipping. Contact the RoadTest Program Manager with additional requests. You must agree to our terms and conditions.

We would like you to provide a 100-word summary of your detailed test procedure. A summary could be as simple as "Use the Raspberry Pi in a home automation security system I am building." You can expand on that summary in the external MS Word document will be uploaded as a Supplementary File. The uploaded test procedure should be written as a project plan/proposal. Some RoadTests may only warrant a 200-300 proposal. But for complex RoadTests (e.g. spectrum analyzer), the detailed test plan can be up to 2000 words. If you do not provide a detailed test procedure, your entry form will be ranked as ineligible.

If you have a fulltime engineering job, travel frequently, or are a fulltime student, we assume you have very a busy schedule. Please indicate that you indeed have the time for this roadtest. All other questions must be selected or answered. If you are currently a roadtester, all reviews must be posted before you are given another product to review. element14 does not provide everything to conduct a roadtest. You need to have the resources (test equipment, soldering stations, electrical hardware) to conduct the roadtest. On rare occasions, roadtesters have requested additional products to be added to the roadtest. If this makes sense to include, we try to update the kit prior to shipping. Contact the RoadTest Program Manager with additional requests. You must agree to our terms and conditions.

THIS SECTION IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF A ROADTEST ENTRY FORM.

Both the RoadTest Program Manager and the sponsor place the most weight on the above questions. An applicant should be as detailed as possible when answering these questions. The most detailed answers tend to get the most attention. We want to know your technical background specific to the roadtest product. We would like you to provide a 100-word summary of your detailed test procedure. A summary could be as simple as "Use the Raspberry Pi in a home automation security system I am building." You can expand on that summary in the external MS Word document will be uploaded as a Supplementary File. The uploaded test procedure should be written as a project plan/proposal. Some RoadTests may only warrant a 200-300 proposal. But for complex RoadTests (e.g. spectrum analyzer), the detailed test plan can be up to 2000 words. If you do not provide a detailed test procedure, your entry form will be ranked as ineligible.

This article will walk you through the process of writing and completing the roadtest entry form. It will also describe what is the most important part of the entry form.

To begin, you must be an element14 member to apply to a roadtest. If you are not a member, go here to register.

Once you have logged into the element14 community, go to the RoadTest & Reviews group of element14, which lists the roadtests open for enrollment.

Click on a roadtest that you want to apply for. When the page loads, you will see the following on the righthand side of the page:

Click the enroll button and a new page will load. "e14 entry Form" will appear at the top of the page. This is the form you must complete to apply to a specific roadtest.

General Instructions

1. Answer all questions. Incomplete entry forms are ineligible.

2. All questions highlighted with a red asterisk must be completed.

2. Describe Your Technical Background: Answer this question relative to the roadtest product(s) and what knowledge and experience you have that makes you qualified to test this product.

3. Summarize Your Test Procedure: this is where you write a quick 100-word summary of your detailed test procedure.

4. Upload your actual detailed test procedure to using the Supplementary File feature of this form.

5. At the bottom of the form, click the blue Publish/Update button. You will get a popup box indicating that your application entry form has been included in our application database.

Specific Instructions

Please provide your first and last name, which are required to ship a product to you. Please write your name as it appears in your element14 Profile. Please use the email address of your account.

You have completed the testing and evaluation portion of the RoadTest. Congratulations! Now is the time to report on your findings and write the review.

Like RoadTest applications, reviews are easy to write. Since your RoadTest review will be read by fellow element14 Community members, potential customers, and the manufacturer of the product you just Road Tested, it is important that you write a review that everyone enjoys to read. Here are some tips on how to write a RoadTest Review that will be both informative, clear, and enjoyable to read.

What is the Purpose of a RoadTest Review?

Road Tests go beyond a traditional product review. They are deep dives into the technical operation, programming and performance of the product. Simply giving your opinion about the product would not provide the deep analysis that is an inherent part of a RoadTest. To fully capture what you tested and how you derived your professional opinion, we would like you to provide the reader a detailed account of your test and evaluation of the product.

What Information Should Be Included In A Review?

Like most technical reports, it helps to provide a brief summary of your RoadTest and what you concluded about the product. You should also tell us what you did with the product.
Images, charts, graphs, screenshots and videos are excellent supporting materials that make your review an interesting piece of content. A comprehensive commentary is also part of a good RoadTest review. Observations on how the product worked under a certain set of conditions should also be included. You should express your professional opinion.

If your experience with the product was positive give the reader some examples to support your opinion. Conversely, if you feel the product has shortcomings, tell the reader why you think this is so. Be objective as you can.

Tips for Writing a Great RoadTest Review

1. Write a Great Summary: If you have a long review or one that covers multiple blog posts, make sure you summarize your current findings. If you have a three-post review, always summarize the previous posts (e.g. on the third post, summarize your findings from the first and second posts as well). This helps the reader capture your conclusions quickly.

2. Use Lots of Visuals: There is an old saying that “a picture is worth a thousand words.” It is as true today as it was when first coined. A RoadTest Review that has great visuals makes it interesting. By adding them to your review, readers will realize you put a lot of effort into your review. They will appreciate it and take the time to read your entire review or even make comments.

3. Be Objective, Not Emotional: RoadTest reviews are quite unlike novels or movies where you get emotionally caught up with the story. A good review is objective and provides supporting evidence of your opinion.

4. Show, Don't Tell: Show the reader what you did. Show a photo of your testing platform. Provide the reader with screenshots of a section of your code. Avoid skimming over the details.

5. Be Fair and Authentic: When you offer your professional opinion about the product, make sure it is reasonable, objective and fair. When you sound authentic, you will come off as being more credible. With earned credibility, you will be considered a trustworthy source for more RoadTests. You will also build your standing within the element14 Community.

6. Read and Imitate: Start reading roadtest reviews. After you read about 5 or 10 of them, you will understand what should be included in a review.

Multicomp Pro - Applications of Waveform Generators Terms and Conditions

These are the terms and conditions which govern the Multicomp Pro MP750511 Waveform Generator RoadTest. This Contest requires participants to submit an application indicating their previous experience with this type of equipment/component, information on what they would do to test the equipment/component, and the Applicant’s desire to post a thorough review of their experience that includes images, photos, or other supplemental materials. Participants will be required to meet the Conditions for Participation.  The winners of this RoadTest will receive the item(s) listed below. RoadTest Reviews are due no later than 60 days after the receipt of the item(s). No other prizes are offered.

The Principal terms of the Contest:

The following words and phrases are used in these terms and conditions and have the meanings given to them below.

Judging Criteria: All of the following which will have equal weighting:

Demonstrated competence with the technologies including links or descriptions of past projects
Qualifications as indicated by current job role and/or schooling/vocational training;
A thorough description of how the Prize would be tested;

Likelihood that the Applicant will post about the Prize and provide a video demonstration on element14.com;
Originality;
Innovation.

RoadTest Review: a thorough review of their experience using the equipment/component with images, photos, or other supplemental materials as outlined in the Contest Site.

Organizer: Premier Farnell plc (registered in England and Wales under company number 876412) whose registered office is at Farnell House, Forge Lane, Leeds, UK.

Conditions for Qualification: in addition to meeting the requirements of these terms, all persons applying to take part in the Contest (each one an Applicant) must provide a RoadTest Application describing what he/she would do if awarded the Prize including similar previous projects, product experience and qualifications.

Terms: these Terms and Conditions which govern the Contest and to which the Organizer reserves the right to make changes from time to time and the latest version of these Terms from time to time will be posted to the Contest Site.

Eligibility

Save as set out in these Terms, the Contest is open to any natural or legal person, firm or company or group of natural persons or unincorporated body.

All Applicants must be aged at least 18 at the time of their application.

Applicants must not enter the Contest if doing so or taking part may:

Cause the Organizer and/or themselves to be in breach of any agreement (including but not limited to any contract of employment) to which they are a party or in breach of any law, regulation or rule having the force of law to which the Organizer or the Applicant may be subject or any policy of the Organizer or the Sponsor;

Require the Organizer to obtain any license, authorization or permission to deal with the Applicant; or

Be in breach of any policy or practice of their employer. Some employers prohibit or restrict their employees from taking part in competitions such as these or receiving prizes under them and the Organizer respects those policies and practices.

The Organizer reserves the right to disqualify any Application made in breach of these Terms and to reject any Application which it reasonably believes may be or become in breach. The Organizer reserves the right to require evidence in such form as the Organizer may reasonably require of any Applicant’s compliance with any of these Terms and to disqualify any Applicant or Participant who cannot provide such evidence reasonably promptly.

Multiple applications are not permitted.

Applications may not be submitted by an agent whether acting on behalf of an undisclosed principal or otherwise.

The Contest is NOT open to:

Any person or entity who is a resident or national of any country which is subject to sanctions, embargoes or national trade restrictions of the United States of America, the European Union or the United Kingdom;

Any employee, director, member, shareholder (as appropriate) or any of their direct families (parents, siblings, spouse, partner, children) (“Direct Families”) of the Organizer and Sponsors;

The Judges, Sponsors/Collaborators or any of their Direct Families.

Each Applicant must fully complete and submit a RoadTest Application by the Application Close.

Applications

By submitting a RoadTest Application Form, each Applicant:

Authorizes the Organizer to use his or her personal data (as defined in the Data Protection Act 1998) for the purposes of running and promoting the Contest;

Authorizes the Organizer to copy, reproduce and publish their application;

Will be deemed to have read, accepted and agree to be bound by these Terms. Applicants are advised to print and keep safe these Terms;

Authorizes the Organizer to copy, reproduce and use the Application and/or Review for the purposes of the Contest and as otherwise contemplated by these Terms. The Organizer will not be responsible for any inaccuracy, error or omission contained in any reproduction or use of the RoadTest review.

Licenses the Organizer to use the intellectual property in the Application and/or Review (IP) for the purposes of this Contest. As between the Applicant and the Organizer the IP remains owned by the Applicant.

Grants the Organizer the right to use his or her likeness, photographs, logos, trademarks, audio or video recordings without restriction for the purposes of Contest or the promotion of it or the Site;

Agrees to participate positively in all publicity surrounding the Contest;

Agrees to be responsible for all expenses and costs incurred by him or her in preparing for, entering and participating in the Contest (save for any expenses expressly agreed by the Organizer to be borne by it in these Terms);

Confirms that he or she owns all IP used in his or her application or Review and indemnifies the Organizer from any claim by a third party that use of any material provided by an Applicant to the Organizer infringes the intellectual property rights of any third party;

Agrees not to act in any way or fail to act in any way or be associated with any cause or group which would have a negative impact on the reputation of the Organizer and/or the Contest.

All applications submitted to this RoadTest must meet the following criteria:

Applicant must be the author, creator and owner of the proposed review idea. Applicant must not submit someone else’s idea;

The proposed application must be reasonably achievable by the within the time constraints of the Contest;

Applications must not include or propose any of the following, the inclusion of which shall render any proposed application ineligible:

Applications which relate to socially taboo topics, such as illicit drug use or sexual gratification;

Applications that are or could reasonably be considered to be illegal, immoral, discriminatory or offensive as determined by the Organizer;

Applications in relation to them which if accepted would infringe or breach any of the policies or terms of access or use of the Site.

No Application may contain any of the hazardous substances identified by Article 4 of Directive 2002/95/EC of the European Parliament on the Restrictions on the Use of Substances in Electronic and Electrical Equipment ("the Directive") or the use of such hazardous substances in the in any such Project must not exceed the maximum concentration values set out in the Directive.

Selecting Winners

Winners will be selected by the Organizer on the basis of the quality of his or her application and its adherence to these Terms.

The Judges’ decision is final and without right of appeal. No correspondence will be entered into. The Judges reserve the right not to select a winner if, in their sole discretion, they do not consider any of the Submissions to merit the Award.

The total number of Winners selected will be at the sole discretion of the Organizer and/or the Sponsor, if applicable.

The Organizer will use all reasonable efforts to announce the Winners via an update to the Contest Site by the date listed above.

Winners agree to take part in all publicity which the Organizer or the Sponsor wishes to use to promote the Contest, the Products featured or other Contests with which the Organizer may be connected from time to time.

Details of the Winners may also be published in the media.

The Organizer reserves the right to award prizes in accordance with section 7.2.

Winners are responsible for all applicable taxes, duties or other charges payable in relation to any Prize.

Liability

The Organizer hereby excludes all and any Liability arising out of the Contest or the acceptance, use, quality, condition, suitability or performance of any Prize, even where that Liability may arise from the Organizer’s negligence.

Nothing in these Terms will affect any Liability of the Organizer for death or personal injury arising from its negligence, for breach of Part II of the Consumer Protection Act 1987 (in the event that any entrant is entitled to claim rights under the Consumer Protection Act 1987) or for any matter in relation to which it would be illegal for the Organizer to exclude or to attempt to exclude its Liability.

Subject to 5.2, neither the Organizer, any parent company nor any subsidiary of the Organizer or such parent company or any of their directors, officers and employees (together referred to in these terms and the ‘Associates’) makes any guarantee, warranty or representation of any kind, express or implied, with respect to this Contest or the Prizes potentially available under it. Neither the Organizer nor any of its Associates shall be responsible for any Liability that may arise out of or in connection with person’s participation in this Contest, the claiming, redemption or value of any prizes under it, the use or enjoyment of such prizes or any events or circumstances arising out of or in connection with any of them. Any implied warranties of condition, merchantability or suitability or fitness for purpose of any of them are hereby expressly excluded. Wherever used in these Terms, ‘Liability’ shall mean any and all costs, expenses, claims, damages, actions, proceedings, demands, losses and other liabilities (including legal fees and costs on a full indemnity basis) arising directly or indirectly out of or in connection with the matter concerned.

General

The Contest is organised and sponsored by the Organizer. The Organizer reserves the right to delegate all or any of its powers, rights and obligations arising in relation to the Contest to any Associate and certain such rights and powers are assumed by the Organizer on behalf of itself and each Associate. Reference to “Organizer” shall be deemed to include reference to each Associate.

The Contest may be terminated at any time if there are, in the sole opinion of the Organizer, an insufficient number of entries, or if the Applications are not of an appropriate standard for a competition of this nature. The Organizer has the right to cancel or suspend the Contest at any time due to circumstances outside its reasonable control.

The Organizer shall have the sole discretion to disqualify (without correspondence or right of appeal) any Applicant it considers to be adversely affecting the process or the operation of the Contest or to be in breach of these Terms or to be acting in a disruptive manner or with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass any other Member.

The Organizer has the right to amend or add to these Terms from time to time. Revised Terms and Conditions will be posted on the Contest Site and it is a condition of entry to the Contest that Applicants agree to comply with these Terms and, if appropriate, such Terms as amended from time to time.

Headings are for convenience only and do not affect the interpretation or construction of these Terms and Conditions.

These Terms and the operation of the Contest shall be governed by and construed in accordance with English Law and any claim or matter arising under these Terms shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the English courts.
