Volkswagen Introduces Cylinder Deactivation On Four Cylinder Engine

Volkswagen is introducing the gasoline-fueled Polo Blue GT with active cylinder management (ACT)—the first Volkswagen with a cylinder deactivation system, and the first commercial application from an OEM of such a system in a four-cylinder engine.

According to Volkswagen, by temporarily deactivating the second and third cylinders under low to medium load states, fuel consumption in the EU driving cycle is reduced by about 0.4 l/100 km. When driven at a constant speed of 50 kph in third or fourth gear, it is possible to save up to 1.0 l/100 km in fuel.

The torque-friendly 1.4-liter TSI fitted to the Polo BlueGT develops a power output of 138 horsepower, and has a combined fuel consumption of 51 mph (4.6 l/100 km). When the Polo BlueGT is ordered with the optional 7-speed DSG transmission, fuel consumption is further reduced to 52 mpg (4.5 l/100 km)

The Polo BlueGT combines many fuel saving measures on top of ACT, like downsizing (reduced engine displacement plus direct injection and charging) and the company’s BlueMotion Technologies (Stop/Start system, battery regeneration, aerodynamic components).

The new car launches onto the market in the fourth quarter of this year. Its base price in Germany will be19,650 euros including VAT.
