The Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Shougang Group have developed a pilot production line with a capacity of 300,000 m2 per year of electrospun nanofibers for lithium battery (LIB). The production technique uses the institute’s self-developed electrostatic spinning membrane equipment and patented multi-nozzle group control.

Electrospinning is a process that uses a strong electrical field to draw a polymer fluid into fine filaments. Electrospun nanofibers can create a porous mat with well interconnected pores, mechanical strength and high electrochemical stability that can function as a suitable separator for Li-ion batteries. Electrospun nanofiber separators can extend cycle life, reduce internal resistance, improve rate performance, and improve safety.

Currently, the pilot production line is producing membrane samples; plans are to expand capacity to 3 million m2 per year in the second half of 2012; to achieve mass production of the new new electrospun nanofiber separator; and complete supporting quality assurance and marketing system.

Source: Green Car Congress
