I took a safer route by first becoming an electronics technician and then going back to school to get a full engineering degree.

Working with engineers helps you focus on which parts of the job you like and don't like.

You also get to assess the environment in which most engineers function.

Sometimes it is not pretty, others its a dream job.

So my slow and steady approach worked for me.

I know many engineers who came out of school and were either thrown into the deep end of the pool or kept out of the fun projects because they did not have the experience to play.

All I can say is that there are many ways to reach your goals. Take time to study each one and pick the one that you think bests matches your temperament.

Most importantly, understand that this is not a one time decision. If things do not work out, look for alternatives. There is no such thing as a fatal decision for your career.

Treat each job as the learning experience it provides, but be always on the lookout for a better opportunity.
