Is because of this that Functional Safety is experienc</description><dc:language>en-US</dc:language><generator>Telligent Community 12</generator><item><title>RE: Why is Functional Safety relevant for Automotive industry?</title><link>https://community.element14.com/technologies/businessofengineering/b/blog/posts/why-is-functional-safety-relevant-for-automotive-industry</link><pubDate>Tue, 01 Aug 2017 21:21:17 GMT</pubDate><guid isPermaLink="false">93d5dcb4-84c2-446f-b2cb-99731719e767:a48dc83e-4f3b-4aaa-84a2-fbc9e846e493</guid><dc:creator>DAB</dc:creator><slash:comments>0</slash:comments><description>&lt;p&gt;Automobiles are finally getting to the point where they need to follow the Aerospace industry with levels of backup systems for critical functions.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;There is a reason why those technologies led to redundant systems with optional manual control.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;If an airplane breaks, you just can&amp;#39;t pull it off to the side of the road.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;With autonomous vehicles and &amp;quot;autopilot&amp;quot; type functions, a critical failure crashes a vehicle at high speed.&amp;nbsp; It never ends well.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I continue to be amused by the &amp;quot;Not Invented Here&amp;quot; mentality of the automakers.&amp;nbsp; Everything they are doing HAS ALREADY BEEN DONE!&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;All they need to do is reach out to the Aerospace Industry and have them help design reliable versions of systems already in place.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;While it was initially rocket science, redundant safety designs are now second nature in aircraft.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The Automobile industry needs to copy what has already been done.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;It will save a lot of people.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;If they do it themselves, then more people will die and be maimed and injured.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;DAB&lt;/p&gt;&lt;img src="https://community.element14.com/aggbug?PostID=3382&amp;AppID=96&amp;AppType=Weblog&amp;ContentType=0" width="1" height="1"&gt;</description></item></channel></rss>
