In October 2016, nine enterprising startups from around the world came to London to participate in the Startupbootcamp IoT | Connected Devices accelerator program. As an official partner of the program, Farnell element14 has been following the startups as they take part in an intense program of events aimed at helping them to secure funding and prepare their products for the global market.

We met up with the startups midway through the program to find out about how they were progressing. They talked about their main focus areas, the challenges and opportunities they've encountered and their plans for the forthcoming Demo Day, where they ultimately went on to present their products in front of a room of potential investors.

About the Startups

The nine startups that participated in the Startupbootcamp IoT | Connected Devices program represented a wide variety of markets and applications, with entrepreneurs travelling from all over the world in order to take part.

CityCrop

A climate controlled, hydroponic system that harnesses intelligent indoor farming technology for the growth of fresh, healthy and pesticide-free produce all year round.

Doordeck

An intuitive, user-friendly solution for performing a wide range of access control operations via a secure cloud platform.

Eskesso

A sous vide cooking appliance that allows the user to cook and monitor healthy, traditional meals while on the go.

HomyHub

A plug-and-play smart device that allows the user to monitor and share access to their garage door via a simple smartphone app.

Joyride

Providing tracking and analytics for cycling in smart cities, helping bicycle fleet managers, city planners and community advocates to access the data they need to build healthy, sustainable cycling programs and infrastructure.

Thingtrax

A tracking solution for connected manufacturing, applying a smart gateway device to deliver intelligent machine, asset and condition monitoring for increased operational efficiency and reduced unplanned downtime.

Trackener

Utilising intelligent sensor technology to help horse owners to gather data on all aspects of their animals life and wellbeing, from detecting health problems to ensuring a consistent feeding and exercise routine.

Woogie

A voice activated, sensor-based device for young children that becomes smarter and more attuned to the child's interests as they interact with it. Also features a companion app that provides parents with valuable information about the child's developmental strengths and weaknesses.

YodelUp

A wearable device that sits comfortably on a glove or mitten, allowing skiers and snowboarders to access a wide range of smartphone apps and gadgets without the need to stop and remove their gloves.

Startupbootcamp IoT | Connected Devices is a dedicated accelerator program offering funding, mentorship and London office space to startups working on smart connected devices for the Consumer and Industrial Internet of Things (IoT). Successful applicants receive access to a global network of corporate partners, mentors, investors and VCs, plus living expenses and office space for the duration of the three-month program.

As an official partner of Startupbootcamp IoT | Connected Devices, we sent a team down to their London headquarters to meet the nine participating startups and discuss their hopes and expectations for the coming months. Over the past three months, the nine participating startups in this year's Startupbootcamp IoT cohort have been immersed in an exhaustive program of workshops, one-to-one sessions and special events, all geared towards helping them to attract investment, solidify their business model and create a market-ready final product.

Demo Day represents the culmination of the Startupbootcamp IoT accelerator program. In a special event held at London's prestigious Science Museum on Wednesday 24th January, each startup will deliver a presentation in front of an invited audience of over 300 partners, mentors, journalists, investors and potential customers.

We caught up with the startups earlier this month, as they were making their final preparations for Demo Day and looking to their plans after the Startupbootcamp IoT program comes to an end. They reflected on their personal highlights of the program, how their products and business models have evolved over the past three months and what the future holds for their businesses...

About the Startups

The nine startups that are participating at Startupbootcamp IoT 2017 represent a wide variety of markets and applications, from agricultural monitoring and manufacturing solutions to data protection and immersive gaming devices.

HUDlog

Through an augmented reality interface, HUDlog is improving professional driver habits so that fleet managers can reduce their day-to-day fuel costs and vehicle maintenance expenses.

Internet of Trees

Thanks to a wireless monitoring module, Internet of trees allows conservation groups to monitor a whole forest, helping them detect fires and monitor environmental factors (such as temperature and soil conditions) affecting forest growth.

Mothive

Mothive helps high-margin fruit growers to increase production yields and reduce the risk of crop disease by giving them the data they need to improve management activities (such as irrigation) and predict future cultivation.

Odyssey Sensors

Odyssey Sensors has built TankSentry, an easy, efficient and cost effective way for low-margin farmers to manage their water supply. Their solution can be integrated with existing data management subscriptions allowing farms to spend less money and time collecting and analyzing water data.

Squad Robotics

Robotic Solutions is giving the manufacturers and owners of cleaning machines a ready to install tracking device that helps an end-user improve clearning habits and increase operational efficiency.

Storybot

Storybot is a screen-free gaming device for children which transports them into immersive worlds. New and popular games can be played solo or with friends to help keep children physically and socially active.

Sonodot

Sonodot increases a warehouse’s or manufacturer’s efficiency and safety by allowing them to track high-value assets (such as forklifts) or perishable goods. Sonodot’s plug and play device provides key stakeholders with this data in real time.

ThingBlox

ThingBlox has developed a range of plug and play hardware modules that allow IoT devices to securely communicate with one another without the threat of being hacked.

Unifi.id

Through a special long range RFID chip in a standard plastic card, Unifi.id gives building managers new levels of insight into where people are in their building, allowing them to deliver better service, improve security and safety, and optimise their utility usage.

In October 2017, nine innovative startups from around the world travelled to London to take part in the 2017 cohort of Startupbootcamp IoT. Since then, they have been immersing themselves in an exhaustive acceleration program, meeting with mentors, attending workshops and developing their business models in preparation for the final 'Demo Day' set to take place on 24th January 2018.

We caught up with the startups as they approached the mid-point of the program to find out how they were progressing. They talked about what they've learned, the changes they've made to their products and business models and what they were looking forward to over the final weeks of the program.

Startupbootcamp IoT | Connected Devices sees nine enterprising startup companies from around the globe relocating to London for a three-month accelerator program that will see them gaining access to funding, mentorship, dedicated office space and a global network of potential investors, corporate partners and VCs.

The startups were carefully selected through an open application process, with the final nine developing hardware products across the Consumer and Industrial IoT space. Hailing from such diverse locations as Greece, Canada, Spain, France, Romania and the United Kingdom, they are united by a passion for innovation and a fully realised prototype or proof concept that they're ready to develop and take onto the global market.

CityCrop harnesses intelligent indoor farming technology to allow you to grow fresh, healthy and pesticide-free produce all year round. By connecting to their app, users can monitor the progress of their crops and share their experiences with other enthusiasts. The CityCrop device itself is a climate controlled, hydroponic system with adjustable trays, a special nutrient dosing system and LED grow lights to provide the optimum environment for producing the freshest vegetables, fruits, herbs and more. CityCrop have joined the Startupbootcamp IoT accelerator from their home in Athens, Greece.

Doordeck is an IoT product for controlling a wide range of electronic locks in commercial and industrial spaces. Drawing on fifteen years of security industry experience, Doordeck offers an intuitive, user-friendly interface and smartphone functionality, empowering users to perform all manner of access control operations via a secure cloud platform.

Eskesso is a sous vide cooking appliance aimed at helping to make healthy, traditional cooking more compatible with busy modern lifestyles. The easy-to-use device is suitable for all cooking proficiency levels and can be controlled remotely from any smart portable device for precise, energy-efficient and professional results. Just add your Eskesso device to a pot of water and you can cook and monitor your favourite meals while on the go.

HomyHub is a Plug and Play Smart Device that allows the user to control, monitor and share access to your garage door using a simple smartphone app. In addition to removing the need for a separate remote for your door, HomyHub allows you to access a full breakdown of who has accessed your door, remotely share access to allow friends and relatives to access your garage when you're not home, and program your door to open for you automatically using sensor technology.

Joyride is a Toronto-based cycling technology company that’s developing the next generation of tracking and analytics for smart cities. Joyride helps bicycle fleet managers, city planners, and community advocates get the data they need to build sustainable and healthy cycling programs and infrastructure.

Thingtrax is a tracking solution for connected manufacturing, offering mid-level manufacturing customers the tools they need to track machines and operators in real time, reducing unplanned downtime and increasing operational efficiency. Their smart gateway device can be applied to deliver intelligent machine monitoring, asset monitoring and condition monitoring for a complete view of the health and efficiency of the user's manufacturing processes.

Trackener uses intelligent sensor technology to help horse owners to monitor and optimise every aspect of their animal's life, from detecting and preventing health problems to ensuring a consistent feeding and exercise routine. Users can also study the data gathered by the sensors, which fit comfortably on the body of the horse, to learn from their behaviour and quickly respond to any abnormal behaviour.

Woogie is a voice activated, sensor-based device that offers a unique learning experience aimed at children aged six to twelve years old. Taking the form of a friendly alien who wishes to learn about life on earth, Woogie uses uses a voice interface and LCD screen to learn about the user's interests and habits, becoming smarter and more relevant as the child interacts with it. A companion app also communicates with parents to provide information on the child's unique interests and developmental strengths and weaknesses.

YodelUp is a wearable devices that allows skiers and snowboarders to instantly access a wide range of smartphone apps and gadgets during a ski run, without needing to stop and remove their gloves. Whether it's controlling your music, answering a phone call or communicating with other skiers on a secure, walkie-talkie style channel, YodelUp offers a wide range of functionalities to improve the winter sports experience, all in a weightless, weatherproof and ergonomic on-glove design that easily retrofits to all of your gear.

Startupbootcamp IoT | Connected Devices is a collective of industry-focused accelerators offering mentorship, investment opportunities and targeted support to startup initiatives all over the world.

Founded in Copenhagen in 2010, Startupbootcamp IoT | Connected Devices' core principal is to support global entrepreneurs through specially targeted accelerator programs. By 2014, it had become the largest accelerator of its kind in Europe, and one of the top 3 in the world, running programs on multiple continents and maintaining an international network spanning hundreds of cities and thousands of mentors, partners and investors.

Startupbootcamp IoT | Connected Devices

Startupbootcamp IoT | Connected Devices is a dedicated accelerator program for startups working on smart connected devices within the Consumer and Industrial IoT space. The Program

Application to Startupbootcamp IoT | Connected Devices was open to startups with a working prototype or tangible proof concept in the designated consumer and industrial IoT fields around the world. Successful applicants were then required to spend the three month acceleration period in London, where they could take advantage of the resources and opportunities available to them.

The program concludes with a special 'Demo Day' on January 25th 2017, in which the participants can celebrate their achievements alongside hundreds of investors, corporates, mentors and press attendees. In return for access to the program, Startupbootcamp IoT | Connected Devices receives 6% equity in the final product, with no board seats and no preferred shares.
