And, yes it would totally work mechanically with some tweaking... with one exception. Conservation of energy. I may be wrong on all genres, but zombies EAT the living for food. They get their energy from this consumption. People who are unfortunate enough to only be bitten turn. Therefore, without a viable food source, the zombie battery deck of 250 would quickly need replenishing.

So, either set up a harvesting crew to collect replacement zombies (again big box stores are a good start), put together a feed farm (I remember zombies like meat, but poultry and or fish might do as well). Of course optimization can occur too, along with dropping down the load requirements to maybe just your super cool compound... and switching to all LED lights.

RE: Engineering THE WALKING DEAD - the perpetual motion generator

Interesting idea.

I thought that zombies migrate to humans in order to convert them into zombies.

If that is the case you'd need something at the end that the zombie thought was a human, ie more than 1 human to look after them??

I like the poster, but one tiny little error is that the alternator field wire needs a lamp/load in order to limit the current and therefore gain the refrence voltage ...

Hopefully you survive the next apocolypse and can put this into action ...

Mark

RE: Engineering THE WALKING DEAD - the perpetual motion generator

I suppose it also depends on which type of zombie you subscribe to: The classic, lumbering Romero-esque zombie that shuffles along, or the rather more unbelievable fleet-footed zombie seen in the Dawn of the Dead remake and World War Z.

Being a purist, I naturally buy into the former, although the power output of Romero's undead would be lower, which is a bit of a bummer come the apocalypse.

RE: Engineering THE WALKING DEAD - the perpetual motion generator

In your "calculations" you fail to consider the reaction force on the Zombie.

Lets get this into sensible units:

4kW of output, 54 inches/second on the treadmill belt = 1.4m/s

the force required to move the belt will be 4000/1.4 = 2857 N

assume the Zombie weighs 75kg, then you'll need a coefficient of friction between the Zombie's foot and the treadmill of 3.8 - which is not credible without teeth on the belt which would be cruel.

Worse, in all the films the Zombies are about human equivalent in power and strength and humans can't manage more than 100W or so for long periods - if Zombies can do 40x better they'll have us on the treadmills.

AND - you haven't allowed for losses in the treadmill, generator etc.

This isn't going to work.

MK
