This post is now complete. The port from Renesas' CC-RX to the GNU-GCC toolchain works and the ported e² studio project is attached. It allows community members to keep on playing with the full kit after the 60 day CC-RX toolchain license expires.
I also ported the Load Cell example. The GCC project (with binaries) is attached to [mention:b6fa6bd9ca5b47f6859bd5dedc1b03a0:f7d226abd59f475c9d224a79e3f0ec07] .

After verifying that the Load Cell firmware runs stable after aligning the DMA buffer start addresses in GCC, I made the same changes to the Thermocouple example. It now runs fine too and communicates with the PC Tool.

I'll remove the RED parts of the post and complete the write-up. I'll also attach the ported e² studio project, with pre-built firmware binary.

I bought a debugger to try and find out why my GCC port isn't working.

I still haven't been able to get the ported firmware to talk to the PC Tool. But I know what works and doesn't work now. All the sampling and the analogue work. The code samples thermocouple, RDT and calculates the temperature.
What I can't get to work is the serial communication. I may have checked all settings 20 times, and verified the user code extensions. Even checked all config files line by line. But the PC Tool does not want to connect to the board when my firmware is loaded.

I have completed the port (although the blog doesn't show it yet).

The project builds and runs on the board. The PC Tool connection fails. I will move the troubleshooting to the end of my road test, When all duties are done.
(and when I can risk damaging things when I try and forge my own emulator for debugging)

Day 2 added: test the toolchain by creating a blinky. Except 10 blinky lines of code in main(), everything will be reused in the final design.
