Very true.

The autonomous vehicle technology has a lot of data, but making sense of it all is the key.

As the accident pointed out, the data was there, but the car kept on anyway.

So you need both the data and then you need to process it into a situational awareness so that the decision tree is simple and responsive.

Given all the potential events while driving, making the right decision all the time is tough.

Even good human drivers sometimes fail that final test. I do not see a machine doing better for a while yet.

Can the computer eventually do a better job? Yes, but it will take a while to build in the reliability and safety algorithms to make the dream come true.

Personally I would like to see all vehicles under computer control. I find many of today's drivers too distracted to drive safely. They need a lot of help to maintain focus and between cell phones and texting, they are not.

Just my opinion.
