What is the correct way to replace a 7805 voltage regulator w/ heatsink?

I have an Atari 2600, and I want to replace the 7805 voltage regulator with one that can handle more current so I can power certain devices off the cartridge port. It looks like the stock regulator is screwed down to exposed metal on the board. I assume this is for heat dissipation?

 

If I get a TO-220 package regulator with a clip-on heatsink like this one:

can I just screw the whole thing down to the board with some fresh thermal paste? The heatsink has a screw hole as well, so I assume it's designed to be used that way?

    Hi Andy!

     

    I don't think there is an issue with screwing it down.

    But, this would be way better than the 7805: Murata DC DC converterMurata DC DC converter

    or if it fits the space physically, then this one is preferred: Recom DC DC converterRecom DC DC converter

     

    Both of these give off far less heat, so no heatsink is needed. The Murata one offers up to 1.5A, the Recom one supports 2A. Your Atari will run cooler with this, and will go a long way toward not being a bottleneck if you need more power for external devices.

     

    They are pin-compatible too, so are drop-in replacements.
