What are the advantages of a benchtop digital multimeter when compared to a portable one?

Hello,

I already own a portable multimeter that I am applying for these use cases:

  • 90% : continuity testing (bip bip)
  • 9% : battery/coin cell condition
  • 1% : debug a running circuit to see if an output pin is on

When the signals that I want to measure vary rapidly, I use the oscilloscope to graph them, in single shot most of the time.

As I've been given the opportunity to choose new gear, I'm considering my options, one being GW Instek Bench Digital Multimeter

However, I'm not sure that I would put it to good use, hence my question: What are the advantages of such a device?

Thanks for your insights.

Thanks a lot to everyone who responded here. Your arguments were all very valuable and part of my decision to go "all in" on the DMM. I'll make sure to post a message here to show it off when it has…

Hey obones, In principle a piece of benchtop equipment offers: Stability, you can leave it connected / in its configuration Accuracy, because it doesn't have to fit to a small form factor, it can…

I would probably choose a Bluetooth handheld multimeter. Then get best of both worlds. I recall shabaz writing up a blog about this one: community.element14.com/.../mp730624-multimeter-quick-review-surprisingly…

Since you have the opportunity... take it.  Have both.  A benchtop meter is still on my wishlist.  Why?  Because once I get it, I will give it a home and it will always be where it's supposed to be - ready to be used.  Right now (especially because it is Winter), my portable is acting as a bench meter.

Yes.  That's a really cheap monitor mount.  The Fluke hangs by its magnetic hanger.  The multicompPRO rests on a light duty aluminum shelf salvaged from different monitor mount.  I think the shelf was supposed to be for a mouse, but it was too small.

Another advantage of the benchtop meter... you don't get crazy readings because the batteries need to be replaced.  I love my Fluke, but sometimes it lies to me like a drunken teenager.

robogary No, sir!  No one wants to see my pile of Harbor Freight meters.  ...I may or may not have a cheap DVM hoarding problem. Laughing
