https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reliability-centered_maintenance

This approach has been used over many decades, which focuses on the analysis of subsystem failure frequencies (i.e. mean time/distance between failure or MTBF) or frequency of maintenance action. Reliability growth modelling could be used to systematically manage the process of reliability improvement. Back in the day one would use a US MIL-SPEC to guide you on how to do it (e.g. MIL-HDBK-189).

Predictive maintenance takes this a step further by incorporating non failure related data based on the qualitative condition of the system during operation.

RE: The Main Differences of Preventive and Predictive Maintenance

It would be interesting to see the costs/downtime differences between preventive maintenance and predictive maintenance, taking into account the cost to measure you devices and acquire the data needed for the predictive solution to work well.
