He put a newer trans in his truck, which is very common for that vehicle I guess, so maybe could be a small scale project for DIY vehicle modders. The problem he has is the lockup was controlled entirely inside the transmission in his truck as originally configured, but in the truck his new transmission came from, it's controlled by a solenoid that is driven by the ECU.

Your project could really help with development projects like mine, as I have a similar truck, but is a couple years older, and has no ECU at all. :-( Also, it's a manual transmission, so no lockup function to control of course even if it did have an ECU. since my uncle does not live close by, using his truck as a test bed is not only dangerous early on, but also a logistical nightmare. A simulator would really help me out, I could have him record several trips with different driving conditions (he is a mechanic, so he'd know what will stress the lockup function most), and play those back against my device so we can be relatively sure it won't trash his truck when we do start field testing of the device and code. :-)

I'll be watching. Maybe I'll even have time/resources to help a bit. I'm a contracting engineer, so I also have paying projects I need to develop, but I might be able to set aside some of the development time I have slated to my uncle's project to help you out if needed... I'll keep in touch to see what opportunities might present themselves.

RE: Vehicle Simulator - VTR / RTR

Hi Doug,

I want to know that if you are using any kind of algorithms in your project. Open source is the way forward! The commercial OBD simulators are way too expensive even on ebay and they look as build during the stone age - this is a real stop when we want to do something in the lab.

Looking forward for the development path.

Thanks!

RE: Vehicle Simulator - VTR / RTR

Hi Doug,

Such a fantastic project. What better way to analyze vehicle data combined with the multiple measurements, and then to be able to replay is incredible.

I absolutely love what you're doing with the sensors.

Also it's been too long that acquiring OBD tools and information has been impractical due to cost, and now anyone will be able to collect data and share it for replay. I'm looking forward to seeing it develop, and hopefully I'll try to construct up a cape or two to try it out too.

RE: Vehicle Simulator - VTR / RTR

Very interesting idea.

It reminds me of learning to do budgets.

If you do not know that your driving habits are bad, then you have no idea about what to change.

Automatically logging and analyzing the data lets you setup a series of driving changes for the user to consider.

Tie it into some mapping software and you can then propose more efficient routes.

DAB
