IMO there are two kinds of devices: devices with no network connection whatsoever and hackable devices.

Now you all understand why I have been a wet blanket on the IoT technology.

Yes it is easy to use, but you send your data to anyone who wants to tap in.

I think it is up to the manufacturers to setup security in the devices, otherwise uninformed users will be at risk.

What?

Why would your thermostat have "Banking and personal information" on it?

Wait, that is the internet as it exists today.

Nothing stated here or by HP is any different than connecting the home laptop to the Internet. In fact an IoT device could not run random software, like a generic PC, without major effort by the intruder.

Here is the root problem. Making an IoT device secure will not make is sell. If the application is useful and compelling to many people, then the device will sell.

It's a pity they did't score the units tested against a series of performance indicators such as the OWASP Internet of Things Top Ten entries.

All the document really says is "Stay away from the scary IoT devices".

The current situation is unlikely to improve unless the cavalier attitude demonstrated by some manufacturers is actually challenged.
