I live in Chicago and before I commuted to work by train, I commuted by car. Awful experience.

Chicago's roads have a pothole problem especially after a cold winter. What happens is as the snow melts the melted water gets below the road's surface through cracks, and when it expands beneath the surface, the pavement gets weakened. In some cases, potholes can be so bad that it can destroy your car's front end with thousands of dollars in damage.

It would be great to have pothole sensors embedded into the the pavement when it is first laid. The sensors can send data back to notify the city where large potholes are forming; maintenance crews could be dispatched out. Potholes cause gridlock too. Impacting transportation in Chicago at certain times of the year.

Randall Scasny

element14 RoadTest Program Manager
