Also out of curiosity do you have any spares of this device I only ask because honestly I lost everything between two fires and that was the last item really that I had to remember my grandmother was her unit . I know obviously it won't be the same unit but I'd actually like to get one I actually also used it in the '80s when I was a early teen. It would be cool to have a working unit like what my grandmother had and honestly you're the first person I seen with a picture of the six electrode unit. I would deal with a smaller unit but I like the quack electrical devices I had this and a violet wand lol. My name is burnt up because the last fire I lost both legs 40% of my body and burns half my right hand and 4 months in a coma still recovering. I hope to hear back from you I'll be surprised if I do.

Wiki: Documents

Forum Post: POLL What UV-C disinfection application interests you most?

UV-C disinfection is not new, but "touch free" disinfection has gained steam today as the spread of Covid-19 , bird flu, and other illnesses are sweeping the globe. This includes UV-LEDs, which are replacing traditional mercury tube UV lights, for disinfecting surfaces and the air. For more on the use of UV light to eliminate viruses and other pathogens, check out part 1 of our blog . This blog will focus on UV-LEDs and their capabilities. Figure 1: The size of wavelengths Light is classified as UV if its wavelength is between 100nm – 430nm. UV light is classified into three bands: UV-C (100 to 280nm), UV-B (280-315nm), and UV-A (315-315nm). Each band transmits a different amount of energy and has different effects on pathogens. With the shortest wavelength, the UV-C band of the spectrum is the most effective disinfectant. The UV-C band does not come from the sun, however, as most of it is blocked by the Earth’s ozone layer. The UV-C that is used for disinfecting comes from artificial light sources, such as mercury tubes and now, specialized UV-LEDs. The disinfection dose can be calculated using the following formula: D = I x t / A where I is light intensity, t is exposure time, and A is surface area that is illuminated. The units of D are typically expressed as J/m 2 or mJ/cm 2 , where 1 mJ/cm 2 = 10 J/m 2 . The required dose is determined based on the properties of the pathogen and the desired level of disinfection, typically 99.9% or 99.99%. For most pathogens, the wavelength with the peak DNA/RNA absorption is 265nm. At this frequency, the UV energy does the most damage to the pathogen, and disinfection is most effective. UV-LEDs, however, operate at 275 to 280nm. DNA/RNA absorption decreases as the frequency moves away from 265nm, and in the worst cases, goes down to about half at 280nm. To compensate for this decrease in absorption, the disinfection dose D should be multiplied by 2 to ensure sufficient disinfection. Figure 2: DUV-LED disinfection efficiency vs. wavelength The DNA/RNA of humans is damaged by UV-C light as much as any other DNA/RNA molecule. Protection should be worn in any environment with UV-C disinfection. UV-A and Blue Light Disinfection In Part 1 of this blog, we discussed using the sun for UV disinfection. The Spring Effect and Solar Water Disinfection (SODIS) show that disinfecting capabilities is not limited to UV-C; UV-A wavelengths and blue light can also be effective. UV-A and blue light cause oxidative stress and the formation of short-term radicals, which do damage to the pathogen as a whole. While not as effective as UV-C disinfection, UV-A and blue light have shown promise in removing pathogens. Because UV-A and blue light are part of the natural spectrum that we see every day outdoors, they are much safer than UV-C. Safety is still a consideration; however, as many health issues, as well as material damage, is linked to excess sun exposure. Using sanitizing chemicals and boiling are commonplace, but UV disinfection is a practice that has been known for generations. People have long been putting fabrics out in the sun, letting its UV radiation remove any moldy musk. One example of this is Solar Water Disinfection (SODIS), a common practice in third-world countries, where water is sterilized by exposure to sunlight for 6 hours or more. The effectiveness of SODIS is attributable to UV radiation and the heat generated by the sun. Figure 1: Solar Water Disinfection How does UV disinfection work? The photons in UV radiation pack quite a bit of energy, due to their high frequency oscillation. The energy can be calculated with Planck’s equation, or E = hv, where h is Planck’s constant (6.626 x 10 -34 ) and v is the frequency of the photon. Bombarding an atom with these photons brings it into an excited state. UV photons, along with the free radicals that they create, can damage DNA molecules causing cells to die. This makes UV light very effective in destroying many pathogens, including viruses such as SARS-COV-2. The Spring Effect During the spring and summer months, the number of viral infections, such as influenza, experience large drops; this is widely known as The Spring Effect. This could be caused by several factors, including significant dilution of viruses by ventilation or wind; however, UV light most likely plays a large role. With the nicer weather, people go outdoors where the UV radiation in the sunlight is able to render pathogens and viruses inactive. The Spring Effect is a phenomena still being studied, but some of its benefits can perhaps be transferred to indoor environments and the cooler seasons using artificial lighting. Disinfecting with Lighting Traditionally, the standard method for disinfecting via UV light has been mercury tubes. Mercury tubes use an electric arc to produce photons from vaporized mercury, producing light, a portion of which is in the UV spectrum. Mercury has several drawbacks, however. As is widely known, mercury is highly toxic. The inhalation of mercury vapor can cause serious issues with the nervous system, digestive and immune systems, lungs and kidneys. Mercury is also non-biodegradable, presenting a problem when disposing of old bulbs. While the useful life of mercury vapor bulbs is longer than incandescent and most fluorescent bulbs, the longevity of LED light sources can be three times longer. LED light sources also use significantly less energy. Finally, mercury tubes are a very mature technology, and will most likely not see any significant advancements. LEDs, on the other hand, are a new technology with performance that is advancing very quickly. The days where LEDs only had enough power to be indicators on electronic gear are long gone; these days LEDs are replacing most forms of lighting, and can be found in modern automobile headlights, street lamps, and heavy duty lighting fixtures in industrial environments. Additional advantages of LEDs include small form factor and better efficiency, and immediate startup without the need for warming up. LEDs can also be dimmed with PWM signals. UV-LEDs have all the advantages of regular LEDs, while being capable of producing light in the UV spectrum. We’ll dive more into the details of UV-LEDs in part 2 of our blog . This can be used in Operation Theater or ICU room to disinfect surroundings after the Operation is over, or a patient left the ICU. The aim is to reduce the HAI [Hospital / Healthcare Associated Infections]. We achieved great results while collaborating with a renowned hospital to test the device. We have used 254nm germicidal lamps of in total 180W in different configurations. Room size: 13ft x 10ft x 8.5ft (approx) Microorganisms painted at 5 different points After 30 minutes of exposure, all samples had more than 8 log reduction in concentration. However, during the design considerations we found that there was divergence of light beams out of a UVC tube lamp. The two corners of the tube lamp have dark zones where essentially no or little light reaches from the tube lamp directly. This forced us to change our initial design to increase the number of tubes in different angels to achieve optimum result in every direction. LED gives a better uniform light beam than lamp, I hope. Also it will be much more efficient in terms of energy and wavelength. But definitely that increases the cost. Another advantage will be - tube lamps are fragile. LEDs have higher longevity and will be easier to handle or replace. The intensity of the exposure can be optimized according to the room size or necessity. Which is not easy in case of tube lamps.

Forum Post: RE: Are you working with UV-C LEDs for Disinfection? This was a pretty big water purification plant, which used food grade polyethylene pipes. When the room lights were turned off you could see all the polyethylene pipes glowing blue - acting like light pipes from the UV sources. Since then I've been interested in using UV to make water safe to drink. There are some countries where it is ill advised to drink the water. I thought about re-purposing the UV sources in those old EPROM erasers, but have not yet launched a development, partly because of safety concerns - UV can cause cataracts not to mention skin cancer. I also thought about using it on the common problem of smelly hockey equipment. Unfortunately UV also degrades many synthetics and the last thing you want is for your protective materials to fail to do their job. The advent of UV LEDs opens up some applications, but it takes significant and complex research, for example, to figure out what dosage would be needed to achieve some specific "germ-free" drinking water target. I would suggest anyone wanting to experiment with UV to take precautions not to expose people to UV. If it wasn't for potential human exposure, it might be more useful for insect control. (I believe it is already used for insect control, but I am too leery of it to try it out) You could imagine an invisible curtain of UV that would prevent any harmful or contagious biologicals from passing through alive, but care would need to be taken to ensure the light didn't reflect onto a human. It might allow better interaction with immune-compromised individuals or contagious individuals.

Forum Post: RE: Are you working with UV-C LEDs for Disinfection?
