There has been a lot of work on USB keyboards and this is the first project I see with mBED. The last one I wrote up was at https://hackaday.com/2017/06/19/diy-shortcut-keyboard/ which used an arduino pro mini. The Teensy also has the ability but seeing as how you need a foot pedal, I would love to see that in the future. I will be sure to write a feature on it since it would be something different.

Novel approach to providing a custom keyboard.

It would also suit kiosks where you might want a very limited functionality.

I once saw a novel way to get a pushbutton function into a computer using a usb mouse and extending one of the buttons.

This has many more options.

Nice post.

Reminded me of the project where I interfaced a keypad to one of the very first digital oscilloscopes we built in the early 1980's.
