Thanks to your great tutorial I happily measured capacitances and calculated the ESRs from the meters displayed DF. I found some correspondences to your results for the different types of caps. That being said, as far as I know, LCR meters (such as the U1733C I use mostly) that measure at a range of frequencies are doing it through an AC waveform without any bias (as far as I know). I too, was concerned about the reverse polarity effects on electrolytic capacitors, but seeing as the datasheets often do have information about internal resistance (sometimes at 100khz AC), I suspected it wouldn't cause any permanent damage. Or at least, I hope not. Electrolytics like to get violent when they fail.

- Gough

RE: Measuring Capacitor Characteristics

Very informative and well written blog on capacitors.

Thanks,

Gene

RE: Measuring Capacitor Characteristics

Great review.

I have not looked at components at this level since Tech School.

DAB

RE: Measuring Capacitor Characteristics

Well written mini tutorial.

Kind regards
