Resistor Wattage vs Package Size

I've been assigned a project to find a better method for cataloging the parts we have on hand. I've been looking at axial through hole resistors and would like to know if there is some sort of industry standard for the resistor wattage versus the package size. If there isn't an industry standard is there a rough general rule?

I appreciate any input.

  • No standard, no rule.

    In any given family of parts the resistors get bigger as the power rating increases but because of the huge range of technologies available there are no simple rules to relate the package and the power.

    (Try looking for 100R 0805 in Farnell and you get offered parts with 6 different power ratings ranging from 62mW to 500mW. It's just the same for axial resistors but the packages are even less standard so harder to find examples so conveniently.)
