Guidance on transformers for stepping down voltage on a 3 phase panel

Hello,

 

My team and I are developing a power monitoring system and we want to use a transformer to step down 277V AC to 24V AC on a three phase panel to be able to safely test our system. While researching a variety of different transformers we are just not sure that it may be suitable for our application. I am asking for anyone who has experience with transformers that could please provide advice or guidance that could be helpful in narrowing down the best possible option for our team would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

    If you are truly wanting to monitor power (watts), you will need to measure both the voltage and current present on all of the phases.  This can be done using voltage-transformers or simple resistor dividers (use relative high resistance values to avoid excess heat and to prevent adding additional current loads) to obtain the voltage readings and current-transformers to measure the current readings.   What ever you do, do with extreme cautions as you are working with potentially lethal voltages. With voltage readings, you may want to make either phase-to-phase readings or phase-to-ground (neutral), but either way you are better off with individual transformers (as opposed to all phases) for these measurements.
