Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe these mats are anti-static which is a concern. I noticed that they don't seem to have a grounding contact. There may be an static dissipative spray, like the film on a "pink" or "blue" poly bag that can be used.

Here's a new product idea : ) Would totally buy it if Farnell stocked it.

I *think* but not sure, that leather is anti-static. And it's not crazy-expensive, for instance artist roll-up holders for brushes, etc:

A size between A3 and A4 could be handy as a work surface, and it could be flat or raised-lipped, depending on how the flaps were designed to be folded on the other side.

And afterwards, roll it up with your most used tools inside : )

Aren't exec desks lined with leather? It's not so different : ) I don't know what the vegan option would be though..perhaps cotton with silicone infusion could easily wrap tools too.

Nice project14 perhaps, designing a decent desk or workspace accessories for productivity?

Those mats are super useful. I didn't find out about those until just a few years ago, and got a not-as-fancy one from the land of online things:

I'm not sure where the tiny mat came from... It might have been a kitchen-aisle item or a dollar store find. It's super thin.

I do also have a letter (A4?) sized one that came with a glue gun.

But the silicone rubber is a little wobbly, isn't it?

To me, I think the elastic edge for my arms is a bit high, don't it?

When working on a SMD board, I need a very flat desk and plenty of room for my arms so that I can work smoothly and gently.

Trembling hands are not practical when working with SMD, for example when the elbow presses on an edge, such as the edge of the silicone rubber.

Shaky is not good either, otherwise the small components could be catapulted away if you suddenly move the mat.

An other think I have about the magnets. How strong they are?

There are a lot of magnets on the mat.

So hm .. a magnetically sensitive component, like a bank card, your personal data can be erased rapidly, or not?

I presume it is not conductive?

If you are looking for a low-cost alternative - I bought a placemat sized red silicone mat at the dollar store, which was intended for kitchen use as a cutting board. It has no pockets, but the price was right (~$1). I also have a non-slip black silicone mat intended for car dashboards.

I use a smaller one - 35 x 25 cm, somewhat thinner (3.5mm) and without magnets. It works really well and is the perfect size for the type of soldering that I do. It was $8 from Amazon.

Interesting mat, the dimples for components and the magnetized regions are a neat idea!

Then I searched on Amazon for it and found this interesting thing: I wonder if the non-pyramid side (which are hollow dimples) could be repurposed for a soldering mat too.

(EDIT: maybe not, it may squish around too much in use).

Or at any rate, looks useful for the normal purpose in a kitchen.
