What's your favorite c210 tip you mention - 90% of the time sounds interesting, and given c210 size, my hakko t12 tip style preferences _might_ be due to a (missed) considerable change with my own s60. For now I'm still trying to use similar tips and sizes than with t12...

(the bottom one in the image, I assume, given the corrosion of the top below the nicely tinned tip )

Nice review. I very recently used a 12v soldering iron for the first time, but it worked well enough that I'll be trying out one of the USB ones. The more soldering I do, the lower wattage irons I use. Maybe this is a normal progression. Given that I've been known to burn a trace or two off a board... maybe this is the iron for me.

shabaz Nice review, but this is over the top, or should I say under the top??? Question: Why in the world would you ever use one?? Nope I think I would rather trust my Metcal, It's old but easy to hold and never gets warm, the handle that is, and has excellent thermal recovery.

Looks like an impressive tool for its price particularly as it works with tips you already have (mine are all Hakko). Using a power pack makes it truly portable. Would it be flexible enough to use as a sole soldering iron, assuming that you stuck to the smaller parts you mentioned? It might be interesting to see the point at which it starts to struggle. Just realized there's an extremely simple solution to USB soldering iron grounding problems!

There's this product on Amazon:

Obviously that's a silly-priced dumb item, but I can take any scrap USB cable and put a banana plug on the end. Wherever the soldering iron is plugged in, there's always likely to be a spare USB port. Many modern chargers have at least a couple of ports.

If it just came with a USB A cable, presumably it just uses standard 5V USB power?
