I'm going to use it for a while before commenting on it much further, but at first impressions it of course behaves very similar to the model 12 12 06 reviewed above, but has a few slight differences; there are more positions (seven) for different wire sizes, and there is a plastic guide to help feed wires into the blade positions. The thinnest wire gauge position is very close to the body of the tool. I would have preferred a smaller range of wire thicknesses, so there were less positions perhaps.

But I can already see that I can do things with this tool that are not possible with other wire strippers that I've seen so far - like being able to take a piece of Kynar wire just 10mm in length, and stripping off a few mm off each end. I had to hold the wire with tweezers, it was that short : )

This of course is not something I would need to do regularly, but it is good to know there is a solution with this type of tool.

However, I can see the risk is high with these very thin, lightweight wires, of bits of insulation falling into the tool, and clinging on due to the thin layer of oil on the insides. An air line may be needed from time to time to blast it clean.

Also, I can see some scenarios where it would be nice not to have the plastic guide to feed wires.

So, in summary, when it comes to 30AWG, the tool has its benefits, but unless I need to strip extremely short Kynar wire, I'd probably use a different tool for 30AWG. For the other wire sizes, I think it will behave similar to the 12 12 06, but I'll report back here in a few weeks. But at first use, it is astonishing that such tiny 10mm length wires can be stripped with accuracy.

RE: Knipex Precision Wire Insulation Strippers Review - Model 12 12 06

Nice review, Knipex do make some fine tools in terms of their robustness, operation and ergonomics. As with a lot of things, you have to pay for the pleasure of using quality tools.

The strippers I use for smaller cable are from KYP and work with a similar action to the StripMaster but only have one blade size and adjust automatically to the cable size.

KYP Automatic cable stripper

If used fast, they will kick back and crush up the stripped end, but if released slowly, the clamping jaws will release first and allow the cable to be removed. They will also strip up to 6.0mm^2, (10AWG I believe) and down to 0.2mm^2 (24AWG).

For larger cables, I have specialist stripping tools and for outer insulation a sheath knife, also from Knipex, with a little shoe to prevent damage to the inner core insulation. Don't tell health and safety though, as they view fixed knives to dangerous and insist on auto retracting knives.

[View:/resized-image/__size/620x153/__key/commentfiles/f7d226abd59f475c9d224a79e3f0ec07-98d90abf-b5e8-4f24-ab73-00a8cf624274/0728.contentimage_5F00_186676.jpg:620:153]

Kind regards

RE: Knipex Precision Wire Insulation Strippers Review - Model 12 12 06

Nice product review.

Have you found anything that does a good job on 30 gage wire?

So far I have not found any device that does a decent job.

DAB

RE: Knipex Precision Wire Insulation Strippers Review - Model 12 12 06

These look quite similar to the ones I've been using for the last 14 years (or more) which are marked IDEAL Stripmaster.
