Thanks Shabaz, a really good review. I just bought one recently and it seems they have updated it with a small button to turn on the 12V without having a battery connected making it much easier to connect accessories.

Someone mentioned that the connection was slightly nonstandard you can see that in the picture below

I think I will follow the previous advice and use a Dremel to adjust it so I can make a special unit for connecting 12V accessories.

The other cable is from a previous device that despite looking much more rugged, exploded whilst starting a 5 litre petrol engine. There are a few of these about now. I am in the same situation as Fabio, I have an old sealed lead acid variety that has now failed so need to invest.

The Noco Genius units range from 400A up to 4000A and I think have a built in torch.

The 400A, 1000A and 2000A versions are available from Halfords in the UK.

Hi Shabaz,

I would have been very skeptical that it would have started your car. Battery technology has certainly come a long way in recent years. Your description of how the unit looks at the circuit before applying power reminds me of the USB phone rechargers. Your tear downs and analysis is always fun to read.

That is quite a remarkable device! Able to jumpstart a 4.0L Diesel engine or a 5.0L Petrol!

Being used to carry around my rather bulky CLARKE 5 in 1, which is capable to jumpstart 2.5L Diesel and 3.0L Petrol, I think it might be time for me to change (well, the Clarke's internal battery is on its last leg anyway), and this might just be a good replacement (definitely a lot easier to carry around! Nice review. I have the smaller 50800 (22Wh) version which is about half the height of the one you have just reviewed.

I originally had a larger SUAOKI G7 which had a better feature set (and a better torch !), however it died after the first charge cycle. Not the sort of reliability you want for emergencies. It was supplied in a more rugged case an came with a mains charger.

I seem to recall that there was an optional cigarette lighter socket attachment for it to plug into the jump start outlet used by the 'smart' alligator clips for 12V use. It also had a coaxial DC power jack with selectable output voltage for powering/charging smaller devices as well as the USB ports.

The Energizer 50800 however is a more appropriate size when using it as a USB power bank.

Amazing that it puts out enough current to crank a car. And undoubtedly good there is some protection circuitry.
