Remember a little thing called September 11th? A huge amount of emergency services infrastructure went down that day, and analogue amateur radio played a huge part in the recovery. Or how about hurricane Katrina?

Too long ago? How about late 2012, Hurricane Sandy? Knocked out the power and all cellular access for several days right up to 40th street.

RE: Augmenting GPS

I'm sensing a little tension about the Amateur Radio thing? To make the statements you make concerning ham radio operators shows a dearth of basic knowledge or concern for the truth and is insulting to the hundreds of hams who serve in every major disaster for no reward but to serve. They certainly don't do it to be some kind of twisted heroes. I suggest you refrain from commenting on thing you have admittedly not reasearched.
