UPDATE Feedback on Experimenting with Waterproof Connectors PLUS a Poll on Test Equipment Prizes

rscasny
rscasny over 2 years ago

About three weeks ago, I posted a forum discussion called Seeking Your Feedback on Upcoming Experimenting Challenge -- Waterproofing Electronics. You gave me some great feedback (changing challenge prizes) and what to include in the challenge kit. This is a follow up to that discussion.

Summarizing the Experimenting with Waterproofing Challenge

The idea is pretty basic. We would give each participant a kit with waterproof connectors, a customized watertight enclosure (with holes drilled for the panel mount connectors) and a single board computer. Your challenge would be to put it all together. You would have to mount the SBC in the enclosure and wire it up. Then, perform experiments that test the waterproofing capabilities of the connectors and enclosure. Write about the results in some blogs.

Kit Version #2

From your previous feedback, I now want to pass by you the current version of the kit. Any feedback you have would be appreciated.

Poll: What is Your Preferred Test Equipment Prizes
Some of you had mentioned that you would like prizes other than consumer electronics. So, I collected some test equipment that I could consider as prizes. Vote on your most preferred one. If you have any other choices, please comment below.

Thanks for the feedback and comments.

rscasny - Looks interesting and potentially straightforward to test. I look forward to applying (assuming I have the time). However, I just wanted to check that the connectors are not just "one-half" …

Thanks for reminding me about both halves.

Actually, the electronics are meant to be mounted in a watertight enclosure. So, what's being tested are IP67 waterproof connectors.

I found this, but I don't think it's practical to ship around the world. Not quite a meter too:

I have the plug-connector matches for all the above connectors except HDMI and RJ45. I talked to the supplier's support and they don't make special plugs for those. They say to use standard plugs. See:

This is my most current version of the kit:

I'm working on the kit. I think going forward, I'm going to give Options for the Grand Prize and Runner Up prize. One option will always be test equipment stuff and the other will be consumer electronics. I should have been doing this all along. Ah, lesson learned!

It will be quite interesting to see these tested with generic cables.

Thanks for working on the connector list. That will make it much easier for contestants.

I suspect it will be fine for the SBC since the water won't get in (assuming they perform properly), but ... the electrical connections themselves may not be perfectly functional as water may get in them.

So technically waterproof, but not designed to operate while immersed perhaps? Would be interesting to find out. I suspect the low-voltage DC available on some pins may inspire electrolysis over time.

I would test it before hooking up something that might object to a short in the cable. Relaxed

I would first test without an SBC inside, just in case a screw isn't torqued enough. Or torqued too much to crack the case.

If the aim is to test the connector's waterproofing alone, then no SBC is the safest. If it's to test the connector's operational status while immersed ... then it's going to require it. Doing things in stages is definitely a good idea.

Perhaps we'll have to use distilled/clean water to minimise conductivity just in case ... but then again, many consumer-facing ports are somewhat short-proof.

I guess water proofing doesn't always mean it has be to used while immersed in water. Sure, it can withstand immersion for some time, but water proofing in general could just mean that it is suitable for outdoor mounting and can withstand heavy rains without letting the water inside the enclosure.
