Sudden Impact Challenge - The Final Week

Running the race until its end...
Good morning and thank you to all the participants in the Sudden Impact Challenge - we've all been inspired by the solutions that have been produced to enhance safety and health of young athletes.
As a reminder, the final submission date is May 8th.  This means that all blog posts, videos, etc. should be in place by Midnight UTC on May 8th.  We will allow a grace period of 24 hours for those who experience technical difficulties.
As per the Detailled Information, the solutions built will be assessed according to the following criteria by Leeds Beckett University:
  1. Accuracy: how well does the proposed solution register the information it is intended to assess?
  2. Convenience: how easy it will be for non-technical personnel, such as coaches and trainers, to use the information?  How easy is it to put together and download the software?
  3. Cost: how much will it cost for a school or sports club to install the solution in their equipment?  Is it cost effective?
  4. Durability: for example, can it withstand multiple impacts and yet continue to function normally?
In order for these solutions to be assessed, we will be working with the challengers to ship the solutions to Leeds Beckett.  Each challenger should send an e-mail to me indicating their Intention to Submit their completed project.  Individual shipping instructions will then follow.
As Leeds Beckett will be testing the projects, it is vital that the following is included in the final submissions:
  1. Assembly and test instructions
  2. Software download instructions and platform requirements (we recommend you utilise the Github facility on element14)
Please note: Solutions which are non-functional upon arrival and cannot be repaired after 1 day in consultation with the challenger will be eliminated as the solution obviously cannot sustain the rigours of transport and therefore is unlikely to be an application that will work on the sports field.

    I had send it a second order of parts but I have not heard back a confirmation or rejection, I know I most likely won't have anything that could compete but I'm not giving up just because I am behind.…

    completely agree.....

    even I have designed my project as stack of many boards as it is initial prototype and many key parts i have not still received.... So I have tried to comeup with solution with whatever I have near around......As I do not have any access to 3d printers or so, I have designed initial enclosure with coroplast but obviously taken care of look and feel of enclosure... One thing I would like to add here is we still have time to do some thing to make sure that the prototype survive under hard impacts... electrolube resin will be helpful here...but if leads beckett will more focus on functionality, user experience and technical stuffs it will be better because durability of the prototype can be increased at later stage of development.... and as my comment if we will receive back our prototype (weather working or broken) we can start again from where we stop....

    Your comments are quite right .. it is a very high bar for what is the initial prototype ....

    This was always going to be a challenge for a more 'experienced' engineer.

     

    It's fair to say that the postal/freight system does impart very high loads on packages and they have allowed a one day repair (in consultation with the challenger) so they are trying to be fair.

     

    We used to have some electronic 'listening' devices that the cable jointers would use when tracing phone cables.

    They were made from a high impact plastic and designed for fairly rough use.

     

    They tended to be repaired by the junior staff, and after a quick go/no go test I always dropped them on the floor from 1m or so.

    There were howls of disgust about it, and my attitiude was if it couldn't survive that, then what use is it sending it out in the field.

    They quickly learnt to ensure their repairs would sustain a drop test, and hence their repairs were much better ...

     

     

    I guess anyone who has produced a device that is supposed to measure and report several g's of force, should at least be capable of being tested.

    It is possible that during the evaluation Leeds Beckett may identify the weak points ....so that the next model can be a proper commercial unit.

    Design for manufacture is a whole other field and set of skills.

    The Leeds Beckett test requirement has been clear from the start, but it certainly adds greatly to the degree of difficulty - far beyond what an actual product development would encounter. The possibility of disqualification if your device fails is an extremely high bar to set for any first prototype, especially a prototype that is expected to be in a high physical shock environment. It can take many design iterations to adequately protect such devices. To make it even more challenging, the test plan from Leeds Beckett is unknown - we don't know what accelerations will be applied or how they will be applied. It is indeterminate if you can even design a device to survive a test regimen when you don't know what the tests will be. In a product design scenario, even when your device performs well to the design objectives, it may need to be tested to destruction, to see what the limits are. I doubt any of the contestants is making enough devices to test any to destruction, so it will be tough to test or ensure high impact performance because you run the risk of disqualification with every test before it is even ready to send for evaluation at Leeds Beckett. This means we can't really push the limits for fear we will have nothing to evaluate. So I guess we just do some relatively "safe" tests before sending the system for evaluation, and cross our fingers that they will perform to an adequate level in the final tests....

    As my project is incomplete due to my changing circumstances my solution is incomplete.

    I'll continue to work on this after the deadline.

    However, this is in effect self-disqualifying with good reason. I let you all down and I feel awful about it, however I have ever decreasing time now and it became difficult for me to balance life with Sudden Impact.

     

    So sorry once again.
