#badass Woman Project Entry - Georgia Grand

Name:  Georgia Grand

Current home town:  London, UK

Did you attend university?  Currently attending, finishing up my degree!

Current Job: Student

What are your favorite electronics projects from element14 presents or youtube (they can be your projects or someone else's) - please provide links:

I have a lot of fun watching Colin Furze projects - they're not centred around electronics, but electronics do feature pretty heavily. He's a little crazy - his high voltage ejector bed project is very funny.

Tell us about your project:

It's a burpee counter. It uses an ultrasonic sensor to measure the distance of your feet when they kick back into a high plank. I had the idea because I've been exercising a lot at home with my sister and burpees often feature in the workouts! but she's complained about getting more out of breath by having to call them out to keep count... i thought this could help!

It's a pretty simple concept but seems to work reliably which is good!

Links or files you'd like to provide that support your project:

Yes - attached you'll find the schematic for my circuit and the python code!

Today I learned what a burpee is. There's a lot of potential in using electronics to monitor sports and exercise activities, I look forward to seeing more

You're welcome to it! I'm glad the diagram explanation came across well!

I had tried different things for the audio like using two phones, one as a mic, one for the video, but it was a lot to handle on top of all the other elements of filming... I agree it needs a little work. Thanks for the feedback!

I did wonder whether people would know what a burpee was... glad you enjoyed the video!

Nice project, and well put together video, the block diagram explanation before the project was particularly smooth. Good Luck!

Cool project. Automatically counting reps really is a game changer. When I am counting reps, I can't think about anything else. It would be great to be able to focus  on thinking about technique or any number of other things.

    Hi Georgia,

Really nice project and presentation! Also cool demo and project feedback! There's lots of uses for it I think.

If in a box with 1/4-20 thread on it, then it could be optionally screwed onto a mini tripod and angled at the person doing or leading the exercise, and used for different exercises too, it's quite versatile. Using the Pi for this seems a great idea, since it could have dozens of profiles or programs for different exercises, for instance an exercise where say two counted movements are to be counted as one, etc.

Incidentally, since you're using a Pi, if it has Bluetooth LE then there's the future potential to send the count to an exercise app on a phone : )

Very tidy-looking Python code too by the way! : )

Scripting, editing, pacing are on point! You showed everything that's necessary, explained it perfectly.

Reminds me that I want to build something that counts laps in the swimming pool, because I forget how many I got already.

Cool to get the feedback of someone interacting with your project!

Thanks for sharing your project and good luck with the contest!
